PROLOGUE

When the lawyer arrived on the scene, her client lay dead on the bathroom floor. Rachel had killed herself by a wall in the ladies’ room. The forensics team swept through the tiles, photographing the body and interviewing potential witnesses. The smell of sanitizers and ammonia prevailed everywhere.

Her client’s body leaned by the wall, all four limbs strewn without life, no doubt of her mortality. Nothing was left for the lawyer except waiting for the autopsy report, which would take weeks. However, right now, she had one more person to see.

The lawyer headed towards the nursery. Tears leveled her eyelids as she paced down the corridor. When she burst in, a nursery staff member stared. “Miss Taylor, what brings…”

The lawyer halted in front of crib number four, where a baby girl rested, barely able to open her eyes. The lawyer reached out and picked up the child, holding her tight. The nursery staff allowed it, even though they were bewildered by the circumstances.

The newborn gently slept without making a sound. The lawyer took her time, but couldn’t stop crying.
With the little baby’s innocence snug so tight, how could she tell this poor soul? Carrie, your mother just committed suicide.

Chapter 1

Abingdon, Virginia

The quaint town of Abingdon lay blanketed under a serene layer of powdery snow. Ice-coated cobblestone streets wound between sloped-roof shops and historic buildings. The peaceful scene exuded an old-world charm, as if frozen in time.

Nestled amidst the picturesque storefronts was the Blue Ridge Café, a cherished establishment left behind by Lily’s late parents. Now, after years of navigating impersonal corporate jobs in bustling cities, Lily stood outside the nostalgic café once more, staring up at the snow-laden roof.

Frigid air pierced her fair skin through her stylish coat as memories flooded over her. She inhaled the mingled scents of roasted coffee beans and cinnamon wafting on the icy breeze. The aroma transported her back to fond memories made within these walls as a child.

She pictured her parents’ smiling faces illuminated by the glow of fairy lights as they hosted lively holiday celebrations. Patrons crowded inside, chatting amiably while frost gathered on the windowpanes. A younger Lily peeked out from the kitchen, proudly helping her mother ice sugar cookies.

With a bittersweet pang, Lily realized how much she had missed this place. It represented the warmth and community she had always taken for granted until years adrift in sprawling cities left her spirit hollow.

Stepping inside, Lily drew a sharp breath as the past enveloped her. The interior remained untouched, still suspended in time. Pale winter light filtering through frosted windows glinted off polished mahogany tables and antique chandeliers.

Lily pictured ghosts of patrons lingering at the counter, her father serving them cheerfully. Her mother bustled around nearby, exchanging friendly chatter. The mental images constricted her heart with nostalgia.

Lily’s slender fingers trembled as she traced the well-worn countertop, picturing her father going through the same motions countless times. She could almost see his smiling reflection on the polished surface. Her vision blurred with hot tears.

The jingle of bells announced Samuel’s entry, jolting Lily from her reminiscing. She discreetly dabbed at her eyes before facing this new arrival from her past.

Lily’s pulse quickened at the sight of Samuel’s athletic build, his muscular arms on display even through the wool coat that shielded him from the icy chill outside. His close-trimmed beard only partially obscured the innate wisdom and compassion radiating from his kind eyes.

Those striking blue eyes had once brimmed with playful spirit during their childhood escapades around this very café, Lily recalled. Now, they held the gravity and responsibility of shepherding their small community as pastors.

Yet as Samuel met her gaze, a glimmer of that familiar boyish warmth surfaced again when he said gently, “It’s good to see you back, Lily.” Unspoken emotion roughened his voice.

“You too, Samuel,” Lily managed faintly, the words scraping her tight throat. She hoped he couldn’t discern the tears she had hurriedly blinked away moments before.

How many complex feelings simmered beneath those simple greetings after so much time apart, so much left unresolved? The air hung heavy with the weight of words still unspoken between them.

An awkward silence swelled. Lily fidgeted with a stray thread on her scarf, unsure how to bridge the distance forged over the years away, chasing separate dreams. Her heart thrummed with a tempest of emotions.

Finally, Samuel gestured to a table with an air of ceremoniousness as if they were two dignitaries attempting to negotiate a treaty.

“Shall we sit and catch up?” he asked with a tentative yet warm smile. Relief flooded Lily at the polite offer of reconciliation.

“Please,” she replied gratefully. Lily loosened her scarf and shed her wool coat before settling onto the creaky wooden chair across from Samuel. She eyed him discreetly as he removed his own outerwear.

Even with time’s inevitable changes etched onto his features, Lily found him just as handsome as the mischievous boy who had occupied many of her adolescent daydreams. The realization sent her pulse skittering oddly.

She couldn’t help admiring the way Samuel’s beard accentuated his sturdy jawline and kind eyes. Her fingers twitched with the startling urge to reach out and stroke along his bearded cheek. Lily quickly tucked her hands in her lap, flustered.

Mercifully, Samuel broke the tense silence first. “I can hardly believe you’re back after so long. But I’m glad,” he mused. “We’ve all missed you here.”

His earnest words coaxed a fragile smile from Lily. “It feels a little strange being back after so long away,” she admitted. “Kind of like stepping into a memory. But also comforting, like coming home.”

Samuel regarded her pensively across the table that separated them. “And how have you been holding up since everything happened with your parents?” he asked delicately after a reflective pause. “I was so very sorry to hear about the accident.”

Lily tensed, staring down at her clenched hands. She focused on steadying her uneven breathing before responding quietly.

“Honestly? Some days are still a real struggle without them,” she confessed with difficulty, her vision blurring with tears. “The grief comes in waves. I just wish so much they could be here now.”

When a single tear escaped Lily’s cheek, Samuel immediately covered her tightly clasped hands with one of his broad, calloused ones. The simple gesture of comfort nearly undid her, but Lily clung fiercely to her composure.

She focused on the soothing warmth of Samuel’s skin against her own, where their hands touched. His sturdy presence radiated calmness and compassion, just as it had throughout their childhood escapades.

“I can’t imagine how difficult that has been for you,” Samuel said gently after giving her a moment to collect herself. “But I know your parents would be so very proud of you for having the courage and strength to come back here. This place always was their pride and joy, but even more so were you, Lily.”

Lily inhaled shakily and offered him a watery but sincere smile, incredibly touched by his kindness. She had nearly forgotten this innate compassion and insight that had marked Samuel as a proper spiritual guide from a young age.

Already, she could feel her battered spirit healing just from being near him again after so many years spent adrift and alone. He had always been her safe harbor in any storm, even when they were just children.

After taking another moment to fully compose herself, Lily turned the conversation to Samuel’s life and time away. She was eager to shift the focus of her own raw grief for a bit.

“So, tell me, what have you been up to all these years since we went our separate ways?” she asked brightly, hoping the lingering redness of her eyes didn’t reveal the inner turmoil still churning within.

Samuel leaned back in his chair and stroked his bearded chin, gathering his thoughts. Lily stared at the distracting motion.

“Well, attending seminary school was definitely a big change of pace,” Samuel began contemplatively. “The quiet campus in the countryside felt so removed from everything familiar. It definitely took some adjusting after our small-town upbringing.”

Lily snapped her focus back to the conversation, genuinely intrigued to learn more about this phase of Samuel’s life she knew so little about.

“That must have been an intensive program of study,” she remarked, hoping her interest sounded natural rather than prying.

“Absolutely, the curriculum was quite rigorous,” Samuel chuckled good-naturedly, either not noticing her scrutiny or politely ignoring it.

“But those long days of studying and mentoring prepared me for returning home and taking on this pastoral role,” he said.

Samuel’s kind eyes took on a look of sincere meaning. It has been gratifying to be trusted with spiritually guiding this community. My congregation makes all those hours of academic work and examinations worthwhile.”

Lily’s expression softened into an affectionate smile at the passion so clear in Samuel’s voice when speaking about supporting the church members who depended on him. She could relate to that sense of purpose he had clearly found.

“It sounds like you truly have found your calling,” Lily remarked warmly. “I’m sure you must be touching so many lives here as pastor.”

Pink tinged Samuel’s bearded cheeks at her praise, and Lily found herself charmed by this evidence that traces of his youthful shyness remained.

“I just try my best to emulate the grace, compassion, and wisdom Reverend Mills always exhibited during our childhood,” Samuel replied modestly. “Though, of course, I still have much more to learn from those wiser than myself.”

Lily’s smile widened, feeling endeared. Even as adults, some things hadn’t changed. Samuel still saw the good in everyone, rarely giving himself enough credit. And the way his face had lit up discussing mentoring local youth told her what a natural caretaker he was.

“The joy you clearly get from guiding the younger generation says enough about your spiritual gifts,” Lily said affectionately. “Your congregation is truly blessed to have you, Samuel.”

The flush on Samuel’s bearded cheeks deepened at her heartfelt words. He took a quick sip of coffee before gesturing for her to share her journey since they had parted ways.

Lily sobered slightly, realizing her experiences contained far less fulfillment or passion than Samuel’s sense of divine purpose. Suddenly self-conscious, she traced the rim of her coffee mug as she attempted to summarize years wasted in unfulfilling corporate jobs in the sprawling city.

Lily confessed, feeling increasingly lonely in such impersonal environments yet lacking the courage or direction to seek something more meaningful.

“It was like I just got stuck on autopilot, passively allowing life to happen around me rather than intentionally living,” Lily admitted with a heavy sigh. She kept her eyes downcast, afraid to see disappointment or judgment in Samuel’s piercing blue gaze.

But when she risked a glance upward, she only found compassion radiating back at her. Samuel had propped his bearded chin on one broad hand and was listening intently, his focus unwavering.

“That must have been an incredibly isolating experience,” he said when she had finished her recap. “I admire you for trusting your instincts enough to seek a better path by coming back here.”

Lily bit her bottom lip as she mulled over his insightful words. “I suppose I finally realized I couldn’t keep ignoring that inner voice urging me to take a chance again,” she mused.

“I only hope I can live up to that leap of faith now I’m back,” Lily confessed, meeting Samuel’s gaze. “Everything still feels so uncertain. But maybe you’re right that the answers will come if I just give it time.”

Samuel nodded slowly, holding her gaze with certainty. “You’ll find your direction again,” he said. “Just listen to your heart and have patience with the process. I have faith in you, Lily.”

His calm conviction flowed over her like a soothing balm, temporarily easing her turbulent doubts. Lily clung to it like a life preserver, keeping her afloat. Samuel knew how to steady her spirit with a look or a word. She had missed that more than she realized.

By now, dusk’s hazy light had faded to night outside the frosted windows. The inky darkness and twinkling stars seemed encroaching, hinting that their time together was drawing to a close.

Lily tamped down the irrational urge to reach across the table separating them and grasping Samuel’s sturdy hand. She longed to extend this connection a little more.

Seeking an excuse to linger with him, Lily leaned forward and placed her hand lightly atop Samuel’s weathered knuckles. His skin radiated a comforting warmth that she tried not to focus on.

“Do you remember many of our childhood adventures here?” Lily asked with an attempt at a casual smile, hoping Samuel wouldn’t notice the way her pulse had quickened.

Fortunately, Samuel appeared distracted by his own memories. With a faraway look in his eyes, he turned his palm upward to meet hers in a loose grip, causing Lily’s heart to flutter.

“Of course,” he said wistfully. “This place holds so many fond memories for me, too.”

Samuel’s tone was low with emotion. Lily shivered when he stroked his thumb across her knuckles, clearly lost in their shared past.

Desperate to ground herself, Lily prompted, “Remember the giant snow fort we built out back one winter?” She giggled girlishly, the sound embarrassingly high-pitched to her own ears.

Samuel’s eyes lit up with joy at the nostalgic reminder, making Lily smile. The tension slowly dissipated.

Remember when we thought putting milkshakes in there to keep them cold was such a great idea?” Samuel chuckled, reluctant to relinquish the comforting grip of their hands.

“I’d nearly forgotten about that,” he mused with a shake. “My mother was so confused when I stumbled inside covered in sticky chocolate syrup.”

Lily’s laugh became more breathless at the physical reminder of Samuel’s touch gliding along her sensitive skin. Flustered by her body's instinctive response, she gently withdrew her hand from Samuel's loose hold, pretending to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

“We did some crazy stuff back then,” Lily replied, hoping to sound affectionate and not shaky. She tried to steer the discussion to safer, more neutral territory.

“Remember when we staged that little play in my parents’ cafe after hours, and my mother nearly had a heart attack when she caught us?”

Samuel winced with exaggeration. “Oh goodness, I think I’ve blocked that one out,” he said, playing along at the memory. “We really were the troublemaking pair, weren’t we?”

His eyes reflected the faraway glint that did funny things to Lily’s insides. It reminded her of the tender looks they exchanged as curious adolescents before life’s paths diverged.

“We certainly had our share of misadventures,” Lily acknowledged, her playful nostalgia softening into something more tender. “But we were very close back then. I’ve really missed that…”

She faltered, throat clenching up unexpectedly on the admission. Lily realized suddenly just how very much she had missed Samuel’s steadfast presence and understanding over the lonely years.

Samuel's teasing expression softened into something more serious, as if he could sense the shift in her mood. “I’ve missed it too, Lily,” he confessed quietly. “Very much so.”

The air between them changed, growing heavy with unspoken longing. Lily shyly met Samuel’s tender gaze, pulse-quickening as if she were a smitten teenager all over again. She worried he could surely hear her frantic heart.

Uncertain what to say or do next, Lily felt relief when Samuel cleared his throat gruffly and withdrew his hand to bring their loaded moment to an end.

“I should let you get some rest,” he announced, glancing outside at the night sky as he moved to stand and gather his belongings.

Disappointment set in, but Lily smiled politely as she walked Samuel to the door, shoving down the confusing emotions his presence had ignited. She hesitated, hand on the frame, watching as he buttoned his wool coat.

Overwhelmed by the desire to prolong their connection, Lily reached out to grasp Samuel’s sturdy forearm.

“Thank you again for today, for everything,” she said earnestly, hoping he would sense her sincerity. “Having your support here during this transition means the world.”

Samuel’s eyes creased with shared emotion as he covered her tiny hand with his larger one. “You’ve always had my support, Lil. And you always will.”

The casual nickname sent shivers skating down Lily’s spine. She reluctantly dropped her hand back to her side when Samuel gave a final parting wave and headed into the moonlit darkness.

Lily watched until his broad silhouette disappeared entirely from sight. Only then did she close the cafe door and lean against it weakly, ignoring how her legs had gone unsteady.

Being with Samuel again after so long had felt so easy, so familiar, like coming home. However, their dynamic now appeared more delicate and hesitant, pulsating with an undercurrent of attraction that hadn't been there during their youth.

With a weary but lighter heart, Lily retreated up the creaky stairs to her small apartment. The coming days held so much uncertainty. But Samuel’s compassion had rekindled hopes she thought long extinguished.

Maybe with him there, she could find her purpose again. Lily clung to this delicate hope as she drifted off, feeling a sense of peace washing over her.

Despite the uncertainty of the path ahead, she found comfort in knowing she had someone by her side this time. Samuel's presence gave her a sense of stability, making her believe she could accomplish anything. The future seemed to glow with newfound promise.

The post Top 8 Lauren Asher Books (In Order) For 2023 appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

An overactive creativity, plenty of imagination, and unexpected plot twists out of nowhere, that's pretty much how I could describe Lauren Asher. Known for her fast-paced action stories, she's one of the few authors who will manage to hook you up from the first chapter.

And trust me when I say that you'll be excited throughout the whole book, devouring one page after another. Lauren Asher is the type of author who knows how to trigger your emotions and bring in a bit of steam, just what I’m looking for in a relaxing book.

Who is Lauren Asher?

Lauren Asher is a writer with a vivid imagination, and she spends much of her free time reading and writing. Her goal is to travel to the places she writes about in her stories. Lauren loves to create characters that are flawed yet relatable, and her stories are fast-paced with plenty of angst, steam, and emotion. In addition to writing and reading, Lauren is also a big fan of Formula 1 racing.

In her downtime, Lauren enjoys watching YouTube, binging on old episodes of Parks and Rec, and searching Yelp for new restaurants to try out. She is most productive after her morning coffee and will never pass up an opportunity for a nap. She is also a very shy author since she have close to zero personal appearances except some rare opportunities.

She loves series, and unlike other authors, I think she does a pretty good job at keeping readers entertained, rather than feeling like she's dragging stories. With these thoughts in mind, here are my favorite and upcoming Lauren Asher books and what you can expect from their stories.

What are the top Lauren Asher Books?

(Check out also the Upcoming Lauren Asher Books)

Love Redesigned (Lakefront Billionaires), by Lauren Asher (2023)

Julian is an attractive man but also the devil hidden behind a beautiful face. He's a rich brat with a few good business ideas. Dahlia, on the other hand, hates him. In fact, he's convinced that if he ever caught fire, she would most likely throw even more fuel on him.

One day, she returns to the small town of Lake Wisteria after a failed relationship, but she fully intends to avoid him. Knowing she’s back in town, he tries the same thing. After all, they've always been in a conflict, even when they were kids, and their families were friends.

But one day, he makes a serious proposal. He finds a beautiful historic house that needs renovation. He needs an interior designer, but he also knows that if Dahlia manages to find her creative spark, she’ll leave the town. It sounds like the perfect scenario.

The project will triple the profits, while his long-term frenemy will go away. The problem is things don’t always go as planned.

Final Offer (Dreamland Billionaires), by Lauren Asher (2023)

This is the final book in the Dreamland Billionaires series. Needless to say, it’s my favorite and brings in a top notch ending to a superlative series. It tells the story of Alana and Callahan. Now, let me give you a bit of background for each of them.

Callahan is one of the Kane brothers. Everyone's talking about him, but no one dares to say anything in front of him. He's well built, good looking, and rich. Everyone knows him, but no one really knows who he is. Except for Lana.

Now, moving on to Lana, she's his best childhood friend, and she knows pretty much everything about him. Now, she's in love with him, although he nearly broke her heart. The two never expected to meet again, but Callahan's grandfather passed away, so he's back in town.

He needs to sort the old lake house, but here comes the surprise. Lana claims to own the house as well. I won’t give you the ending, but trust me, it’s going to be amazing.

Terms and Conditions (Dreamland Billionaires), by Lauren Asher (2022)

The best part about the Dreamland Billionaires series is the fact that while there is a bit of connection between books, they’re not really related. Each book follows a different set of characters, so you can read whichever you want without feeling clueless.

I think this series got better and better with each release, which is the opposite of what normally happens. Anyway, let me get into it. This time, you have Declan and Iris. Declan is likely to inherit a media empire, but his grandfather’s inheritance clause kicks in.

Declan had to get married and get a child. Mission impossible! Until his assistant Iris decides she wants to help. In theory, the plan is simple. Move in, marry, get a baby, and set some rules, only to ensure there wouldn't be any issues at all.

There's one problem, though. Both of them start caring for each other, but they don’t want to break their rules either. After all, this is a business partnership. While it may look like you can guess the ending, get ready for a few plot twists on the way too.

The Fine Print (Dreamland Billionaires), by Lauren Asher (2021)

This is one of the first Lauren Asher books I’ve ever read. It’s also the book that got me into the Dreamland Billionaires series, as well as the release that convinced me about her skills and fast-paced writing style.

Rowan is one of the billionaire brothers of the series. His mission is to make dreams come true, from luxury hotels and theme parks to production companies. His biggest challenge is to renovate Dreamland, and he knows this could be the project of a lifetime.

He seeks help from Zahra, but hiring her wasn’t necessarily his best idea. She landed the job by mistake, after criticizing Dreamland in an honest review. All in all, one thing leads to another, and Rowan ends up kissing her.

Despite the attraction, Zahra is ready to prove that money can’t fix everything. And this is when the action begins. There's tension, but there's also attraction. He's a difficult boss, and she's an annoying employee, but somehow, it works.

Redeemed (Dirty Air Special Edition), by Lauren Asher (2021)

Although this is the fourth book in the Dirty Air series, it’s a standalone story that’s not connected to the others. Just like other Lauren Asher books, it tells the story from two different points of view. This time, you have Santiago and Chloe.

Santiago had the perfect life, but one mistake ruined everything for him. He was the most sought-after bachelor in town. Now, he’s just a shadow, a monster who no one wants to see. However, his life is about to take an unusual turn when Chloe breaks into his home and, well, his life.

Chloe was interested in finding her father, and all clues took her to Italy. But one bad decision brought her into Santiago's life. Now, the two are stuck in a fake relationship. Get ready for a few quirky adventures and plenty of humor, but only until things get steamy.

As we all know it, a fake relationship can’t be fake for too long.

Wrecked (Dirty Air Special Edition), by Lauren Asher (2020)

Jax is the type of man most women would avoid. Sure, he’s a good looking man, but at the end of the day, everything about him could be seen as a red flag. Literally, he has screaming problems. He likes adrenaline, alcohol, pills, you name it. If there’s something women dislike in men, he has it.

Jax has an addictive personality, but there’s a reason behind all these. He finds it impossible to deal with his pain without his dirty little helpers. However, he’s successful. And one day, his team hires Elena. She’s meant to help him fix his reputation.

Initially, she finds the job quite appealing. She's about to work for a Formula 1 team, and she's about to show off her PR skills. None of them expected this collaboration to turn into a war zone. She tries to find his weakness, while he struggles with his new addiction, her.

Collided (Dirty Air Special Edition), by Lauren Asher (2020)

I think it’s pretty obvious the author has a thing for Formula 1. After all, I can easily think of a few Lauren Asher books based on Formula 1 stories, and this is one of them. Liam is one of the golden stars in Formula 1, but no one really knows that he's actually a fraud.

He’s made to look seductive and devious, probably one of the best build characters in Lauren Asher’s books.

Then, you have Sophie. She’s definitely a fantasy, but her presence around Liam is likely to ruin his career. She’s not his friend, but his rival. And he knows he needs to resist her. Everyone knows they won’t do well together, but the tension is quite difficult to resist.

Although the concept is pretty similar to other books, I think this is by far the most intense book from Lauren Asher. Everything happens so fast that you just don't know what to pay attention to. It's very realistically written and, by far one of the best releases in her portfolio.

Throttled (Dirty Air Special Edition), by Lauren Asher (2020)

The first book in the Dirty Air series is one of the most intense ones too, mainly because of all the plot twists hitting out of nowhere. Noah is new to Formula 1. Everyone can see his talent, but he’s still young and has a lot to learn. He’s determined to do whatever it takes to be the first.

His approach is truly professional, well focused, and less likely to be distracted by anything. No one can go through to him. Now, Noah is also Maya's brother's teammate. Maya has a crush on him, but she knows it’s nearly impossible to get to him.

It’s not like Noah hasn’t noticed her, but his career is simply more important. In his eyes, she’s nothing but a random temptation. She wants love and fireworks, he wants to destroy everything, but release tension. It’s a destructive relationship, but if they play their cards right, it might actually work.

Best Quotes From Lauren Asher Books

Zahra’s it for me. I know it with everything in me, and my intuition has never been wrong before. There’s nothing in the world I’ll find more beautiful than her. Not the sun. Not the moon. Not even the entire galaxy compares to the light she radiates wherever she goes.

―Lauren Asher, The Fine Print

How about ten words then?” I laugh. “I’d like to see you try.” “I am falling in love with you, Iris Elizabeth Kane.

Lauren Asher, Terms and Conditions

I think we owe it to ourselves to unapologetically love who we are no matter what. Because if you don’t love yourself, then why do you expect anyone else to?

Lauren Asher, Redeemed

Final Thoughts on the best Lauren Asher Books

You’ll notice a bit of similarity in more Lauren Asher books. The idea is the same, two souls that hate each other, but with a very fine line between love and hate.

However, each story is unique, with its own action and plot twists. And the fast-paced effort makes everything even better.

“Well, you’re looking mighty Swedish today, officer!” Taunted Laylah

“Madam, what are you trying to accomplish here?” Asked the handsome, well-groomed police officer in his best English, ignoring the intended insult.

“What does it look like? “Snapped Laylah in the churlish tone of a recalcitrant teenager.

The officer, who was not used to this kind of backtalk gave Laylah a confused but firm look and said, “You seem to be upsetting people.”

“Am I? What are you going to do with me?” said Laylah, tauntingly.

“Well, so long as you are not hurting anyone. We allow our people to speak freely here. Just be careful that you do not cause trouble.” Said the officer with a narrow-lipped smile who then departed without ceremony.

Laylah took a deep breath and then let it out, watching her breath seep out of her mouth, a bit flabbergasted that she was let off with a gentle warning. She had threatened to steal their cloudberries and cursed their monarchy! “These people are as stoic as tree stumps,” she thought. Astride had never mentioned this about them. How could she leave that out? Laylah wondered. This was surely a kink her plan, but she was on a mission! I will be in prison before anyone can say Cloudberry Souffle! She huffed under her breath.

Laylah took another deep breath and breathed out again watching her breath roll out of her mouth like tumbleweed ghosts from the cold, crisp air. If she had been in Buffalo, the officer would have taken her to the station for some questioning and would not have been so polite. She knew she would have to try again.

An Office Romance

An unapologetic one-night stand and a business partner I can't resist.

After a long night of pleasure with a random guy, I resumed my routine.

Nothing’s wrong with having fun once in a while.

That same week, I had to convince a new billionaire in town that I was the best interior designer in LA.

Usually, I don't sweat it, but this was different.

My potential business partner was the random guy I met at the club the other night.

Seeing me presenting my ideas in his office appeared surreal to him.

He had little regard for my proposals.

Cole doesn't believe I am a suitable professional counterpart due to our first encounter.

First impressions last longer, right?

Even though I prefer to keep my professional and personal life, doing both to achieve my goals wouldn’t hurt.

With my job on the line, I am willing to risk everything.

The Prince Who Lost His Pants is a comic, urban fairytale that is funny on the surface but which deals with important themes such as gossip culture and how this can get out of control and cause harm to innocent people if targets of defamation are not given a right to reply and to seek their rights. Given that it is a book for children, the topic is dealt with in a light hearted way.

The book has a great deal of allegory and symbolism for the more discerning reader under the surface layer of comedy. It looks at corruption, crime and the need for integrity and good leadership to protect people from injustice and abuse.

All of this is done is a light hearted way given that it is a book aimed at children, albeit older children.
Given the nature of the themes in the book, it may also appeal to some adults.

David realised from the horrified looks on people’s faces that something was  wrong and it wasn’t just the looks of horror on their faces that did it either. It was the sudden chill around his legs, the sudden shock of icy cold wind biting into his legs which were slowly beginning to freeze in the cold December air. He looked down at his legs to see the reason why and realised with horror that his legs were completely bare and there, lying at his feet in an untidy heap were…. his pants!

Oh my God!” he gasped silently to himself. “Oh my good God!”

Suddenly, for no good reason at all, it appeared that David’s pants (trousers) had fallen down. All the press men were now furiously taking pictures of David, the future king of Britain, standing in the snow in…… his underpants!

David gasped and flushed a crimson red as desperately, he tried to pull his pants up! “Oh my God, I will never be able to live this down,” he muttered under his breath as he frantically, pulled his trousers up. “I have got to get my pants back up before too many people notice!” he thought but deep down, he knew it was too late! People had already noticed. As if to make the point, some people in the crowd looked away out of embarrassment.

Others tried bravely to keep their chins up and smiled politely as if they hadn’t noticed but David could tell from the embarrassed looks in their eyes that they most definitely had!

Then horror of horrors, came the horrifying discovery that no matter how many times David pulled his pants up, they fell right back down again! He could not keep them up!

This was a dreadful situation. This was terrible. David was distraught. He knew he was in danger of becoming a laughing-stock. After all, how could a prince be a prince and a future king  in his underpants with no trousers?

This… was a disaster!

David could hear mutterings of disapproval growing from among the formerly friendly crowd that now seemed to be turning against him!

“Outrageous behaviour!” said a grumpy looking man with a huge moustache and an oversized grey overcoat, “not fitting at all for a prince to be standing around in his underpants like this in broad daylight!”

“A prince with no pants!” sneered another, “It’s unheard of! What is the world coming to? It wasn’t like that in MY day!”

“You can’t crown a man king in his underpants! It’s not possible! It’s not traditional,” cried another. “He’ll have to be replaced if he doesn’t want to wear pants!”

And so, it went on and on and on. One by one, the crowd of people who had been so friendly to David now turned their backs on the poor innocent prince one after another.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, there was worse to come! The next day the newspapers were covered in shocking headlines!

“Playful Prince Likes to Flash his Pants,” screamed one headline!

“Prince David Wears Union Jack Knickers!” shouted another.

“Pantless Prince’s Underwear Shame!” reported another.

“Say no to the prince who says no to pants!” announced another journalist in his article about the incident.

And so, it went on and on and on. It was horrendous.

Poor Prince David’s life became an absolute misery. He couldn’t go outside his door for the steely, disapproving looks of hostile people and cruel chants by cheeky roadside builders of “Wot no pants? Wot no pants? Wot no …Wot no… Wot no pants?”

4 Daylight

The bright sunrise shined through the lower half of one partially closed window across the dark room. I stretched slowly from underneath his luxurious sheets and suddenly realized I was alone. Looking around, I saw he was not in the

room. I sat up quickly and noticed I had on his shirt from last night’s event. It wasn’t buttoned. Adjusting in the bed, I attempted to close it but couldn’t. (Well of course not. Shoot.) My eyes searched in the darkness, for my gown or the robe from last night.

(Oh, come on. He put it over there. Where is it?)

While rustling the covers in frustration, I heard his sultry voice. “Good morning, Miss Delacroix. Now you wouldn’t be looking for your clothes to sneak out, would you? Guess what? I have them. Unless you plan to wear my shirt and take your chances on not getting arrested, you can’t leave just yet.” He started chuckling.

The remaining blackout curtains slowly lifted to the same midway point as the one bringing in the morning light. Startled, I wondered. . . (How did he know I was looking for. . . Wait, he isn’t even in here. He’s watching me. Freakin’ robot house.)

Still sitting up and trying to figure out where he was, I just said, “Uh, good morning. Are you watching me from some surveillance camera, stalker?”

His playful laughter could be heard, but he didn’t appear. He said, “I left something for you in the bathroom. Come join me in the kitchen when you’re ready.”

Jumping out of his bed, I walk to the bathroom. (Ha, I still have on these socks, that’s funny.) Getting closer to the doors, the bathroom automatically illuminated. I hesitated for a second before going in. “Shoot, that scared me.”

The bathroom was the size of a studio apartment and went around the corner with the glass window walls for the continued panoramic view that his entire home had. It was all very beautiful. His bathroom had a crisp spa feel but without feminine touches. It had slick silver, gold, and white marbled granite, landscape artwork, and illuminating mirrors. (This is very nice, but I have to pee.) Passing the floor to ceiling glass shower, sauna, and an enormous white Japanese soaking tub, I searched. Then I noticed a granite pillar with a fireplace and television within it on the other side of the tub and a built-in corner bar with a fully stocked glass door refrigerator. Ancient sword towel racks and a gold-colored oversized loveseat on the other side of the TV and ireplace pillar also caught my attention. (Nice. This is beautifully designed, but where is the dang toilet in this joint?)

Behind the couch were two separate doors, one that housed the toilet and bidet with an exit door on the other side. (Found it!) Curious about the other door, I opened it discovering an equally massive wardrobe and dressing room with high and low rows of neatly hung formal and casual clothes in rich wood compartments behind glass. Built-in dresser drawers with flat surfaces and rotating racks of all sorts of shoes. (Don’t be too nosy.) At the far end were two black chairs, full-length mirrors, and double doors next to a door that I didn’t explore. I walked through fascinated and opened the furthest double doors, and I was back in his bedroom. (I knew this was a giant dressing room and he would have a crazy amount of designer clothes. Yeah, he’s a neat freak. I just made a circle. His home is very nice.)

Quickly backtracking, I took the opportunity to test out the buttons on the black warming toilet and bidet. (Wait, is he watching me pee? No, he wouldn’t. It’s not like he’s a sicko like what’s his name in prison.) My feet were now warming up, and I realized the bathroom floor was heated. (Well, of course it is duh.)

Making my way to wash my hands I saw my cleaned gown peeking through a grey garment travel bag. Also, inside were my washed bra and panties clipped to a hanging rod. Grabbing my dress and underwear I went to lay them on the couch and noticed my name on two white boxes with orange ribbon. I decided to further investigate after washing my hands. Opening the large box first, I discovered coconut scented and flavored toiletries, an extra-large leisure pant set, black socks, and size 8 women’s slides. The black Repose floppy pullover cropped sweatshirt and wide-leg drawstring pants were things I had at home in other colors. Shocked, I covered my wide smile, giggling, and thought. . . (Well, aren’t you clever and very sweet. If you were trying to impress me, you did.)

Rushing, I put my hair in one long back French braid, freshened up, and changed into my gift attire, still grinning. (I feel so spoiled. Hey, a perfect fit, very good guess.)

Carrying the boxes and garment bag into his room, I collected my clutch and jewelry and made my way back down the wide main hallway of his home. It was only then that I heard singing to the upbeat melody of “Make It Right” from BTS.

(Well, someone is in a happy mood.)
