What are the best sci-fi romance books tell us? Sometimes, love is found in the most unexpected places.

How do Sci-Fi and Romance work together?

Sci-fi and romance are two genres that often go hand in hand. But what is it about this combination that resonates so deeply with readers, and why does it continue to grow in popularity?

One key aspect of why sci-fi and romance complement each other so well lies in their shared ability to provide an escape from the mundane. Sci-fi transports readers to realms of advanced technology, distant galaxies, and alternate realities, offering a thrilling departure from everyday life. Romance, on the other hand, delves into the emotional depths of human experience, exploring themes of love, connection, and passion. When these elements intertwine, readers are gifted with stories that are not only exhilarating in their imaginative scope but also deeply rooted in the universal quest for love and understanding.

Both genres frequently showcase characters with remarkable depth and complexity. In sci-fi, protagonists often grapple with challenges on a cosmic scale, pushing the limits of human ingenuity and bravery. In romance, characters navigate the intricacies of relationships and personal growth. The fusion of these elements results in narratives where characters are not only saving worlds or unraveling mysteries of the universe but also experiencing profound personal transformations and emotional journeys. This combination creates a dynamic and immersive reading experience, marked by both external action and internal development.

Sci-fi's traditional role has been to ponder the ‘what ifs' of the future, exploring potential advancements, societal changes, and ethical dilemmas. It prompts readers to consider the implications of technology, space exploration, and even the evolution of humanity itself. Romance, in contrast, brings the narrative back to the core of human existence, questioning what is most vital in life. It often highlights themes such as the power of love, the importance of relationships, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

In the following list I collected some of the most engaging science fiction romance novels from the recent years to answer some of your ‘what if' questions. I arranged the list in reverse chronological order.

What Are The Best Sci-Fi Romance Books?

A Journey Must Be Taken, by H.L. Howard (2023)

In my view, H.L. Howard's novel stands as a fascinating entry in the science fiction romance genre, enriched by a backdrop of wars and societal turmoil. This setting against major conflicts and political upheaval adds layers of complexity and contemporary relevance to the narrative.

The story intricately weaves elements of fate and spiritual guidance within the tapestry of human relationships. Tauri's journey through tarot reading and his quest to reconnect with Libi is particularly captivating, offering profound insights into the role of destiny in our lives.

The book is tailored for new age audience, appealing to those interested in spiritual energy and astrology. This targeted approach enhances its allure to readers seeking a blend of romance and spiritual exploration.

The incorporation of a music playlist as a means of expressing love adds a unique dimension, while the characters' cultural backgrounds and personal growth throughout the story contribute depth and authenticity.

Reading this novel, I really connected with its exploration of love and belief amid the challenges we all face. It's like it's mirroring our own search for where we fit in the grand scheme of things. The narrative is rich and compelling, making it a standout choice for readers drawn to these themes.

Calamity, by Constance Fay (2023)

This book is a compelling combination of space adventure and sizzling romance. The story revolves around Temperance Reed, a captain of a mercenary ship, and Arcadio Escajeda, the second child of a powerful intergalactic family. Their forced collaboration on a mission is fraught with tension, not just from the external threats they face, but also from their own clashing personalities and hidden agendas.

Fay brilliantly captures the essence of an enemies-to-lovers trope, creating a dynamic between Temper and Arcadio that is both fiery and deeply compelling. Their interactions are a captivating dance of mistrust, attraction, and gradually deepening understanding.

What I find particularly engaging about Calamity is the depth of its world-building. Fay creates a universe that is rich in detail. From the intricacies of intergalactic politics to the nuances of the mercenary lifestyle.

The story's pacing is excellent, with a balance of action-packed scenes and character-driven moments that keep the reader hooked. The romance is skillfully woven into the fabric of the narrative, offering a satisfying emotional journey alongside the thrill of space adventure.

Star Bringer, by Tracy Wolff (2023)

Star Bringer is an exhilarating addition to the sci-fi Romance genre. This novel is a thrilling ride from start to finish, blending elements of adventure, intrigue, and, of course, romance.

In a universe threatened by a dying sun, the story follows seven misfits as they find themselves aboard a stolen spaceship. The dynamics among the characters, each with their own secrets and agendas, create an engaging and often humorous narrative.

The interplay between these diverse personalities – a princess, a prisoner, a con artist, a warrior, a priestess, a mercenary, and a reluctant leader – adds depth to the story, making it more than just a romance set in space. Their journey is fraught with danger, unexpected alliances, and a growing sense of camaraderie that evolves into something deeper for some of the characters.

Lilith and the Psychopath, by Johnny Malapert (2022)

This book is not about the classic psychopath with violent behavior. Instead, it is about the intelligent and educated individual who can easily integrate in today’s society, regardless of what they heed to face in it.

The modern psychosapien is no longer an introvert with an obvious disorder, but a happy and authentic individual with a successful career. This is Johnny Picaro – a psychopath, a sociopath, or perhaps both of them. Those who know him are aware of what he is capable of.

The book is filled with suspense and covers a relationship that can easily shift between a perfect scenario and a dramatic outcome. It is the type of story that will make you hold your breath as you turn one page after the other.

Barbarian Mine, by Ruby Dixon (2015)

The ice planet is harsh and difficult for most survivors. However, it definitely feels good to be alive. There are no takeaways and good TV shows, but life has never been sweeter. The story is told from a personal point of view.

The teller belongs to a tiny tribe. No one is aware of the surrounding dangers, though. A stranger is lurking from the dark and watching what is going on. Eventually, the teller becomes captive and ends up falling in love with the kidnapper.

One thing leads to another. First, it is resonance. Then, there is love. Then, there are kids. However, the man is an authentic barbarian – the type who would chain a woman to claim her. He is the type who could hit someone with a club over the back of the head. But why does she crave for him then?

The Last Hour of Gann, by R. Lee Smith (2013)

Amber Bierce has one final chance, she has lost everything, apart from her sister. She also has two tickets to reach the first colony ship ever. She joined the Sleeper with a long contract and the need for a better life.

However, she ends up in the middle of nowhere. She sees wreckage around her and no rescue for the few survivors. No one really hopes to get back home. One day, they are found by Meoraq, an aggressive warrior with an incredible thirst for blood.

Things change when the warrior lays his eyes on Amber, and things are about to change.

Grimspace, by Ann Aguirre (2008)

Sirantha Jax can definitely stand out in the crowd. She has a rare gene in her DNA, meaning she has some powers that most people would call supernatural. However, she sees herself as a normal person, but she also knows that she can take advantage of her talent.

She can jump ships through grimspace and becomes one of the most appreciated navigators in the Corp. But then, her life changes to 180 degrees when a crash landing kills every passenger. She ends up in jail, with literally no memory of this crash.

Then, a bunch of rogues decides to help her out and release her. She is out of prison, but she has been taken out with a reason – she now must help the group to overthrow the government and establish a new order.

The Host, by Stephenie Meyer (2008)

This is the first book in the series with the same name and follows Melanie Stryder's story. She refuses to give up in front of an alien invasion that leaves people untouched but takes their minds over. The one going for Melanie's brain is about to have a surprise, though.

She refuses to fade away. She stays conscious and aims to keep her mind intact. The soul is going for her body as a host is called Wanderer. Melanie keeps thinking about Jared, another human being still trying to hide.

Wanderer decides she wants to meet this person. The feminine soul starts craving for a man she has never known. Both Melanie and Wanderer end up trying to find a man they both fell in love with – who is going to win?

Finders, Keepers, by Linnea Sinclair (2005)

The book follows Trilby Elliot, a trader trying to avoid the law with a few changes to the starfreighter. An unexpected visitor comes out of nowhere, literally. He seems to have fallen from the sky, and he claims to be from another planet – Avanar.

He comes up with a confusing story and some names that make no sense. But then, despite coming from a different civilization, he seems quite friendly. Trilby knows that even though she can hide Rhis, she does not want to keep him.

She has learned the hard way that men tend to break hearts, so she is cautious about it and refuses his offer for help. Until one day, when something seems to be hunting both her and Rhis. Now, they need to work together in order to survive.

Gabriel’s Ghost, by Linnea Sinclair (2005)

This is one of the most appreciated and awarded sci-fi romance books out there and tells the story of Chasidah Bergren, a former captain of interstellar ships. She used to be one of the most respected people in the industry, until one day, she ended up in court for a crime she did not commit. She was found guilty and sent to prison on a different planet. With dangers approaching from all directions, she has to kill a guardian in self-defense, not knowing that things will get even worse now.

Gabriel Sullivan, a dominating mercenary, is thought to be dead. However, he is back somehow, and he aims to give Chasidah a ticket to freedom. But obviously, the possibility to go free is not really free – she has to pay the price.

Final Thoughts on the Best Sci-Fi Romance Books

Reflecting on the best sci-fi romance books, a particularly memorable episode from The Space Between Stars by Anne Corlett comes to mind. This scene embodies the enthralling combination of science fiction and romance, and why this genre resonates so deeply with its readers.

In the book there's a moment when the two main characters, surrounded by the eerie beauty of a universe that's both magnificent and indifferent, highlighting the small, yet significant place human emotions hold in the grand cosmos.

As they labor side-by-side to repair their damaged ship, their conversation subtly shifts from the mechanical to the personal. It's fascinating how the author uses the backdrop of a desolate space station, a relic floating in the void, as a metaphor for their unexplored feelings. The station, once bustling but now silent, mirrors their untold stories and unexpressed emotions.

The scene where they finally confront their feelings is beautifully understated. It's not marked by dramatic declarations but by a mutual understanding, a meeting of eyes that conveys more than any grand speech. This simplicity is what makes it so powerful.

This scene from The Space Between Stars exemplifies the essence of sci-fi romance. It's not just about otherworldly adventures or futuristic settings. At its core, it's about the human experience — our need for connection, understanding, and love.

PROLOGUE

When the lawyer arrived on the scene, her client lay dead on the bathroom floor. Rachel had killed herself by a wall in the ladies’ room. The forensics team swept through the tiles, photographing the body and interviewing potential witnesses. The smell of sanitizers and ammonia prevailed everywhere.

Her client’s body leaned by the wall, all four limbs strewn without life, no doubt of her mortality. Nothing was left for the lawyer except waiting for the autopsy report, which would take weeks. However, right now, she had one more person to see.

The lawyer headed towards the nursery. Tears leveled her eyelids as she paced down the corridor. When she burst in, a nursery staff member stared. “Miss Taylor, what brings…”

The lawyer halted in front of crib number four, where a baby girl rested, barely able to open her eyes. The lawyer reached out and picked up the child, holding her tight. The nursery staff allowed it, even though they were bewildered by the circumstances.

The newborn gently slept without making a sound. The lawyer took her time, but couldn’t stop crying.
With the little baby’s innocence snug so tight, how could she tell this poor soul? Carrie, your mother just committed suicide.

The post Top 16+ Romantasy Books For 2024 In Reverse Chronological Order appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

As a fervent admirer of romantic fantasy, or ‘romantasy' as it's affectionately known, I've always found myself enchanted by the unique blend of heart-fluttering romance and the bewitching allure of fantasy worlds. The genre has a special way of weaving together the thrill of adventure with the intricacies of love, often set in realms that brim with magic, mystery, and sometimes dragons!

In this article, I'll take you through a curated list of the top romantasy books, arranged in reverse chronological order. I picked the first book of the series in each cases. These titles represent the crème de la crème of the genre, each offering a unique escapade into realms where love and magic intertwine.

The Allure of Romantasy

Romantasy has always held a special place in the hearts of readers who yearn for stories that blend the escapism of fantasy with the emotional depth of romance. This genre offers a playground for the imagination, where authors craft worlds with intricate magic systems, mythical creatures, and societies that range from opulent courts to rugged, dragon-filled landscapes. What sets these narratives apart is the central role of romance, often fraught with obstacles and heightened by the fantastical elements at play.

The allure of romantasy lies in its ability to transport readers to worlds where the stakes are high, both in terms of magical conflicts and matters of the heart.

What Are The Top Romantasy Books?

Fourth Wing, by Rebecca Yarros (2023)

In Fourth Wing, Rebecca Yarros introduces us to a world where the elite are dragon riders, trained in a brutal war college. The protagonist, Violet Sorrengail, is an underdog in every sense, facing enormous challenges due to her physical fragility in a world that favors strength. What captivated me most about this book is Violet's journey, not just as a dragon rider aspirant but also as a young woman fighting against prejudices and expectations.

Her relationship with Xaden Riorson, the formidable wingleader, adds an electrifying dynamic to the story. The layers of political intrigue, the looming war, and the mystery surrounding the leadership's secrets create a compelling backdrop for Violet's struggles and triumphs. Yarros has a knack for building tension, both in terms of the plot and the evolving romance, making Fourth Wing a standout addition to the romantasy genre.

Divine Rivals, by Rebecca Ross (2023)

Divine Rivals is a mesmerizing tale where love and war among gods intertwine with the aspirations of young journalists. Rebecca Ross has crafted a world that feels both ancient and immediate, as Iris Winnow and Roman Kitt, rivals at a newspaper, find themselves inadvertently bound by a magical connection. The romance that blossoms between them is beautifully juxtaposed against the backdrop of a divine war. Ross’s ability to blend the personal stakes of Iris and Roman with the larger, mythic conflicts is remarkable.

The book strikes a perfect balance between the enchanting and the heartbreaking, as Iris's journey takes her from struggling to keep her family together to the front lines of a celestial battle. The concept of letters being the medium of their connection adds a poetic touch to their relationship, making “Divine Rivals” a truly unique read in the romantasy genre.

Throne of Glass, by Sarah J. Maas (2023)

Throne of Glass is a book that redefined my expectations from the romantasy genre. The story follows Celaena Sardothien, a fierce assassin with a quest for freedom that is both thrilling and emotionally resonant. Maas has crafted a character in Celaena who is not just lethal and skilled, but also layered with vulnerabilities and a dark past. The romantic elements, especially her evolving relationships with the Crown Prince and the Captain of the Guard, are intricately woven into the narrative, enhancing the depth of her character.

The mystery of the deaths in the castle adds a gripping element of suspense. Maas's world-building is exceptional, creating a land devoid of magic yet brimming with political intrigue and hidden agendas. Throne of Glass stands out for its strong female protagonist, a captivating blend of romance and action, and a well-constructed fantasy world.

Once Upon a Broken Heart, by Stephanie Garber (2023)

In this book Stephanie Garber takes us on a journey filled with love, curses, and the quest for happily ever after. The protagonist, Evangeline Fox, is a character who immediately captures your heart with her belief in true love, despite the odds stacked against her. Her desperation to stop a wedding leads to a deal with the Prince of Hearts, a character whose wickedness is as enthralling as it is dangerous. Garber's storytelling is a beautiful tapestry of emotions, weaving Evangeline's plight with a series of choices that are both haunting and alluring.

The narrative is rich with unexpected twists and turns, blending the ethereal quality of fairy tales with the darker aspects of bargains with immortals. This book not only explores the complexities of love and desire but also the consequences of choices made in moments of desperation. Garber has created a world that is as mesmerizing as it is treacherous, making Once Upon a Broken Heart a standout novel in the romantasy realm.

The Serpent & the Wings of Night, by Carissa Broadbent (2022)

Carissa Broadbent presents a riveting blend of dark fantasy and romance. The protagonist, Oraya, is an adopted human daughter of the Nightborn vampire king, living in a world rife with danger and political intrigue. Her journey to compete in the Kejari, a legendary tournament, is not just about survival but also about self-discovery.

Broadbent's portrayal of Oraya is complex and engaging; she's a character who grapples with her identity in a society where she's seen as less than. The alliance with Raihn, a dangerous and enigmatic vampire, introduces a romantic tension that is both alluring and fraught with peril. The novel explores themes of love, loyalty, and the struggle for power in a world where vampires dominate.

One Dark Window, by Rachel Gillig (2022)

Rachel Gillig's novel masterfully intertwines gothic fantasy with romance. The protagonist, Elspeth Spindle, needs a monster to survive in her mist-locked kingdom, and she finds one in the Nightmare, a spirit in her head. Gillig's storytelling is remarkable in how it explores Elspeth's internal struggle with the Nightmare, blurring the lines between protector and captor. The introduction of a mysterious highwayman adds layers of intrigue and romance to the tale.

The setting is hauntingly beautiful, with its eerie forests and dark magic, creating a perfect backdrop for the unfolding drama. Gillig skillfully weaves a story of shadow and deception, where Elspeth's quest intertwines with forbidden love and a kingdom's dark secrets. The narrative is a compelling mix of suspense, dark fantasy, and a romance that evolves in the most unexpected ways, making “One Dark Window” a standout in the romantasy genre.

House of Earth and Blood, by Sarah J. Maas (2021)

Sarah J. Maas creates a richly imagined world where half-Fae and half-human Bryce Quinlan seeks vengeance in a contemporary fantasy setting. Maas's talent for crafting strong, relatable characters shines through in Bryce, a character grappling with grief and determination in equal measure. The novel combines elements of mystery, action, and romance, creating a narrative that is both gripping and emotionally resonant.

The romance between Bryce and Hunt Athalar, a Fallen angel, is both tender and intense, adding a compelling layer to the story. The world-building is particularly noteworthy, with its unique blend of magical and urban elements. Maas delves into themes of loss, freedom, and the power of love, making House of Earth and Blood a profound and captivating entry in the romantasy genre.

Kingdom of the Wicked, by Kerri Maniscalco (2021)

The story centers around Emilia, a witch seeking to unravel the mystery behind her twin sister's murder. Maniscalco's writing is lush and evocative, immersing the reader in a world where magic is both a gift and a curse.

The introduction of Wrath, a prince of Hell, adds a tantalizingly dangerous aspect to the narrative. The chemistry between Emilia and Wrath is electric, weaving a complex web of attraction and mistrust. The book excels in its dark and atmospheric setting, combined with a plot that is both thrilling and emotionally charged. The themes of family, revenge, and the exploration of forbidden powers make Kingdom of the Wicked a compelling and unforgettable romantasy read.

A Shadow in the Ember, by Jennifer L. Armentrout (2021)

A Shadow in the Ember, the first book in Jennifer L. Armentrout's Flesh and Fire series, set in the Blood and Ash world, is a story of destiny, love, and betrayal. Seraphena Mierel, a character born to fulfill a dark deal, is tasked with an impossible mission: to assassinate the Primal of Death. Armentrout's narrative is masterful, blending elements of fantasy, romance, and suspense. Sera's character is beautifully complex, torn between her duty and her growing feelings for the Primal of Death.

The world-building is rich and immersive, creating a setting that is both magical and menacing. The romance is intense and fraught with moral dilemmas, adding depth to the characters and their choices. This book is a compelling exploration of themes like fate, love, and the struggle for power, making it a standout addition to the romantasy genre.

A Court of Thorns and Roses, by Sarah J. Maas (2020)

A Court of Thorns and Roses is a spellbinding tale that beautifully marries the elements of fairy tales and fantasy. The story revolves around Feyre, a young huntress, who finds herself in the magical land of the Fae after a fateful encounter in the woods. Maas's world is exquisitely crafted, full of enchantment, danger, and complex politics.

The romance between Feyre and Tamlin, her captor turned lover, evolves in a way that is both passionate and fraught with tension. The novel shines in its exploration of themes such as sacrifice, love, and the struggle for power in a land on the brink of war. Maas's writing is rich and evocative, drawing the reader into a world where every action has significant consequences. This book is a must-read for those who love their fantasy with a strong dose of heart-rending romance and intricate world-building.

The evolving relationship between Tisaanah and Maxantarius adds a complex layer of romance to the narrative. The book excellently balances the elements of high-stakes magic, political intrigue, and emotional depth, making it a standout in the romantasy genre for its portrayal of a powerful heroine and her fight for justice and love.

Lara, a warrior princess trained in isolation, is sent to the Bridge Kingdom under the guise of peace but with a mission to destroy it from within. The character development of Lara, from a tool of vengeance to a woman torn between duty and her newfound love, is compelling. Meghan Quinn is an emerging talent in the world of romantic comedy writing. Hailing from Southern California, Meghan received a full-ride scholarship for sports but graduated with a degree in Human Development.

After a long commute to work, Meghan started writing as a way to cope with boredom and the talking people in her head. That’s how her first novel, Caught Looking, was born. Since then, she has published many books that are full of humor and multiple points of view.

When asked in a past interview if she sees writing as a career, Meghan replied with a resounding “hell yes!” She loves writing standalones and romantic comedies, and her readers love her for it. Meghan’s advice to other writers is to spend money on an editor, they are worth it, and to her readers, she says thank you for being a part of her stories and falling in love with her characters.

He's Not My Type, by Meghan Quinn (2023)

He's Not My Type is a captivating romance novel that I found both heartwarming and frustrating in equal measure. The central premise of the book, where the protagonist becomes roommates with Blakely White, the girl he's been secretly in love with, sets the stage for a tumultuous and emotionally charged narrative.

The story is told from the perspective of a lovestruck man whose teammates, in a well-intentioned but somewhat misguided attempt to play cupid, offer him advice on how to win Blakely's heart. This advice, ranging from not wearing a shirt around her to cooking dinner, adds a layer of humor and relatability to the story. The protagonist's internal monologue, filled with confusion, longing, and a touch of desperation, resonates with anyone who has ever been in love.

What I found most compelling was the ‘fake date' plot twist, where the protagonist offers to be Blakely's date at a wedding to make her ex jealous. This part of the story is beautifully written, filled with moments of intimacy and vulnerability that are both sweet and heart-wrenching. The author does an excellent job of building tension and chemistry between the characters, making their interactions both believable and engaging.

Vacation Wars, by Meghan Quinn (2023)

Tessa is ready for a great time. Her sister is about to get married. Meanwhile, she's about to have the perfect holiday in Santorini, the ideal spot for beautiful sunsets, Greek hospitality, and good looking men. It sounds perfect, but her sister has a different plan.

What looked like a girls' holiday turned into an adventure to find a lover. Tessa’s sister is determined to help her find someone. And then, she had a deal back in high school. She was supposed to find the love of her life before her sister actually gets married.

Luckily for Tessa, her childhood crush is also in Santorini, working in a local resort. But Myles has other problems to think about. He’s excited to meet Tessa again, but he also needs to solve a business conflict with his father.

As they start reconnecting, Tessa and Myles realize there is something there. However, it takes a bit of work to renew old feelings, especially if they want to turn their holiday fantasies into real love. I won’t give you too many spoilers, so I’ll let you read the book to find out what happens.

The Way I Hate Him, by Meghan Quinn (2023)

After a difficult period that included failing her last semester of grad school and getting dumped by her boyfriend for being “boring,” the narrator finds herself seeking revenge. She steals a box of cherished possessions from her ex-boyfriend with the intent to rat him out to its true owner, Hayes Farrow, who is both her brother's nemesis and inexplicably attractive. However, her plan backfires when Hayes catches her and offers her two options: face the police or work off the crime.

Opting for the latter to avoid jail time, she starts to work for Hayes and surprisingly begins to develop feelings for him. This new relationship is further complicated by her brother's strong disapproval, leaving her caught between her newfound feelings and family loyalty.

In this small-town narrative, the complex interplay between failed ambitions, revenge, and evolving relationships lends depth to what could have otherwise been a typical romantic story. The emotional struggles of the protagonist offer a nuanced look at the challenges of balancing familial loyalty and personal growth.

Right Man, Right Time, by Meghan Quinn (2023)

This is the third book in The Vancouver Agitators series and one of my favorite Meghan Quinn books. Of course, it makes more sense to go through the previous releases first, it will give you a few clues about the characters and their history.

Anyway, this story is written from a personal point of view, so you’ll be in the main character’s shoes. And the beginning puts you in a pretty awkward situation. What can be more annoying than running into your ex? The problem is even worse when you know your ex is going out with your nemesis now.

Overwhelmed with panic and discomfort, she went for the first guy she saw at the bar and jumped on him. A deep kiss and the beginning of a lusty passion. After all, he was by far the most attractive man around there.

She was happy he did him a favor, but now she owed him. That’s how she ended up in a fake relationship with a hockey player. At first, it looked alright, but things got complicated later on. Whether good or bad, I’ll let you find out yourself.

A Long Time Coming, by Meghan Quinn (2023)

The third book in The Cane Brothers series won't let you down, I promise. A bit of action, a little humor, and a conflict with many plot twists, that's what you're going to get from this book. This is another book written from a personal point of view, one of Meghan Quinn’s signatures.

Anyway, Lia's about to get married, and she's far from having everything ready. So she recruits her best friend to help out. He obviously accepts, but the real struggle is not with the actual planning. Instead, it's all about how their relationship evolves.

The closer they get to the wedding day, the more unusual the relationship between them becomes. Something is clearly wrong, but he can’t tell what. Then, it hits him. He’s in love with Lia, his best friend. And he wants Lia for himself only, yet she's about to get married, and he's seeing someone else.

Will he go for it? Is he going to prove Lia that he’s the right man for her? There’s also the option to swallow it and hope this temporary crush goes away. I’ll let you find out what he decides, but I’m pretty sure we’ve all experienced something similar in life, so it’s interesting to see what’s going on.

Resting Scrooge Face, by Meghan Quinn (2022)

This is one of my best recommendations for Meghan Quinn books, especially if you’re not into long series. The story follows Nola, who’s just experienced an ugly breakup. Christmas is coming, but she doesn’t want to do with it.

And to make everything even worse, Caleb is also in town. He broke her heart years ago, but she still has something for him. Anyway, one day, Nola gets a letter from someone who's in the exact same mood. Just another Scrooge. She has a new friend, and the two start exchanging letters.

What she doesn’t know is that the other Scrooge is actually Caleb. The two must determine whether they can start a new life by getting to know themselves first, or they'll let their past ruin their future.

Untying the Knot, by Meghan Quinn (2022)

A love story turns into a nightmare. She’s married to Ryot Bisley, one of the most attractive men in town and a former baseball player. He used to be a rough man, but she managed to make him softer. The beginning of their relationship was far from what a woman would expect, though.

More than a decade into their marriage, the man she used to love is no longer there. His frowned face is back. He’s grumpy again, not to mention his rough attitude. He feels lonely after baseball and tries to build a new life, but she wants more from him.

She decides to divorce, but that’s when everything changes. He refuses to accept her divorce papers and starts a new game to bring her back into his life. Is he going to succeed?

Runaway Groomsman, by Meghan Quinn (2022)

Sawyer Walsh works in Hollywood. He’s a popular screenwriter with a good eye for good stories. But no matter how good he is at spotting good love stories, his personal love life is terrible. It’s so bad that he even sees his ex getting married to his best friend.

The Hollywood pressure is simply too much for him to handle, so he decides to take a break. So said, so done, Sawyer ends up in a small town in California, where he meets Fallon Long. She runs a local tourism business, and Sawyer ends up living in one of the business residences.

Fallon has a goal, bringing the family business where it was years ago. And when Sawyer tries to help, she thinks he’s just another superficial Hollywood worker who’s looking for a good time. However, he’s ready to prove her wrong, even if that means adopting a new lifestyle, away from fame.

Royally Not Ready, by Meghan Quinn (2022)

The first book in the Royal series won't let you down. It's one of the best Meghan Quinn books if you like a few plot twists, a bit of romance, and a little mystery. Anyway, her story is fairly simple. She sells bikinis out of a truck in Miami for a living. It's a good business until one day, when Keller approaches her.

The interaction is quite surprising because he has a very strong British accent and an unusual suit. He kept talking about her home country, but he did it with a cold attitude that no one could figure out. Everything changed when he mentioned her mother’s name.

At that point, she knew he wasn't just a weirdo, despite acting like one. One thing led to another, and there she is, in the middle of nowhere, in a country she's never heard of and ready to discover that she's actually the princess of a freezing land.

The Reunion, by Meghan Quinn (2022)

Martin and Peggy are ready to celebrate their 50th anniversary, and their three children obviously have to attend too. Sure, their children are grown now, but they've always tried to be role models for them and show them that love can last forever.

With all these, their three children fail to find love. Ford is all about work and career. Cooper has just divorced, and he can't get over it. Palmer, on the other hand, loves to travel and wants the old school hippie lifestyle, rather than marry some local doctor.

What they don’t know is that their lives are about to change. As they come together to celebrate their parents, they’re about to experience new rivalries and old feelings. And this wild ride may just as well bring in some new potential partners for them, who knows?

What Are The Top Ali Hazelwood Books?

(Check out the Upcoming Ali Hazelwood Books)

Check & Mate, by Ali Hazelwood (2023)

Check & Mate presents an intriguing blend of romance and strategic gameplay that had me hooked from the first page. As a fan of both chess and romance novels, I found the plot's integration of these elements to be one of its major strengths. The story revolves around Mallory Greenleaf, a former chess player who left the sport after it led to her family's downfall. Her reluctant return to the game sets the stage for a captivating journey filled with unexpected twists and emotional depth.

One of the book's greatest strengths lies in its character development, especially that of Mallory. Her internal struggle between her love for chess and the painful memories associated with it adds a layer of complexity to her character. The portrayal of Nolan Sawyer, the reigning ‘Bad Boy of Chess', is equally compelling. His character is not just a stereotypical antagonist; there's a depth to him that unfolds beautifully throughout the story.

The chess-themed plot is clever and well-crafted. The author's knowledge of the game shines through, making the chess scenes both authentic and exciting. The metaphorical use of chess strategies to mirror the characters' emotional battles is particularly ingenious.

Loathe to Love You, by Ali Hazelwood (2023)

Loathe to Love You is a collection of three short novellas (see also below) featuring the love stories of three best friends: Mara, Sadie, and Hannah. Each of them finds themselves entangled with men they initially dislike but eventually fall for. The stories are a testament to how hate can transform into love under unexpected circumstances. The narratives in these stories are carefully crafted, eliciting the intense emotional connection between the protagonists, even as they grapple with their evolving feelings for each other.

Each story has its own unique charm. Under One Roof narrates the magnetic chemistry between Mara and Liam, who begin as adversaries living together, but gradually can't ignore their mutual attraction. The quirks of Mara and Liam's personalities, coupled with their undeniable chemistry, make their blossoming romance a delight to read.

Stuck With You revolves around Sadie and Erik's relationship. Despite their initial separation, their compatibility and shared interests make them an ideal match, and their ability to overcome conflicts solidifies their bond.

Below Zero is an interesting tale of Hannah and Ian's struggle against the harsh Arctic environment and their long-standing rivalry. Despite a slightly lackluster chemistry, the conflict and plot progression still make for an engaging read. As a whole, the book offers a satisfying reading experience, with

Under One Roof was my personal favorite. The appearance of the three friends in each other's stories adds an appealing continuity to the collection.

The Love Hypothesis, by Ali Hazelwood (2021)

This story is far the most popular among the other Ali Hazelwood books. It has 48,500+ reviews on Amazon, which is an extreme number even among popular books. It was picked up be several communities including Booktokkers.

As a third-year graduate student, Olive Smith doesn't believe in long-term romantic relationships, but her best friend does, and that's why she gets into a tricky situation. Convincing Anh that she's dating and on her way to a happily ever after will take more than a few hand-waving Jedi tricks.

Scientists need evidence. So, like any dedicated biologist, Olive panics and kisses the first man she sees. This man is Adam Carlsen, a young, college professor who is known as an asshole. So Olive is suprised when Adam agrees to keep the secret and become her boyfriend. But when a major science conference goes awry and Olive's career is almost thrown away, Adam surprises her once again with her unwavering support.

Suddenly their little experiment comes dangerously close to catching fire. And Olive realizes that she can't deny what her heart feels.

Love On The Brain, by Ali Hazelwood (2022)

Bee is a neuroscientist who is trying to get her career off the ground. The bright, bubbly woman's last relationship almost tanked her career before it even started. Her fellow scientist, Levi will have to work with Bee in an academic project together, despite the unpleasant atmosphere.

The story's central character, Bee, is exceptional, and this excellentness helps make it all the more dynamic. Reading the narrative of Bee feels like so 2020s, including all the science and cultural references.

This rom-com book is for science nerds. If you're looking for a fresh and sexy read, look no further than Love On The Brain. It's packed with all the nerdy goodness you could ask for, plus some sizzling playful romance to boot.

Under One Roof, by Ali Hazelwood (2022)

Mara and Liam turn from enemies to lovers, and Liam is in many ways similar to Adam from The Love Hypothesis. The author seems to have some inexplicable attraction to smart, taciturn, but tall, big guys.

I won't shoot the end of the story, but in the end I felt a lot more sympathy for the main character and found myself rooting for the couple.

The science set is a little bit different now, since Mara is an environmental engineer who is passionate about her work. She loves finding new ways to make a difference in the world and protecting the environment. She is always looking for new ways to improve her skills and knowledge so she can make a greater impact.

Below Zero, by Ali Hazelwood (2022)

Below Zero is the story of Hannah, a NASA aerospace engineer. After her most recent Arctic expedition left her injured and stranded, the only person willing to come rescue her was Ian, a colleague with whom she always an argument.

They bond over their shared love of all things “STEMINST” (science, technology, engineering, math, and…), and they soon find themselves inseparable, despite their way of thinking is different.

This rom-com book follows the unlikely pair as they navigate their new relationship and try to find a way to make it work despite their different backgrounds. Can these two nerds find true love with each other? Or will their relationship be doomed?

Love, Theoretically, by Ali Hazelwood (2023)

The New York Times best-selling author delights readers with a new STEMINIST rom-com. This lighthearted read follows the story of two physicists who are caught up in a competitive feud.

Though they come from different walks of life, Elsie and Jack are two physicists who share a bond that is undeniable. Elsie is a passionate and ambitious young woman who has always been driven to achieve her goals. Jack, on the other hand, is an arrogant and self-centered physicist who has always been content to let his work speak for itself. Despite their differences, the two have always been drawn to each other.

As they try to one-up each other, they find themselves caught in a web of academic politics and fake dating shenanigans. Though this book is full of laughs, it also has an important message about the importance of collaboration and respect between rivals.

In conclusion, the Ali Hazelwood rom-com novels are a great way to escape the everyday hustle and bustle. They are perfect for when you need a break from reality and want to explore uncanny romances filled with strange situations.

]]>

Rebecca Yarros is a name that resonates well within the romantic literature community. A self-proclaimed hopeless romantic and coffee addict, Yarros' ability to delve into the complex emotions surrounding love, loss, and redemption has made her a cherished author among readers.

With a pen that effortlessly dances across multiple genres, her narrative is a heartfelt journey that often leaves readers introspective long after the last page is turned. As a second-generation army brat, her affection towards military heroes is palpable in her work, creating a unique blend of romantic narrative intertwined with the valor of service.

What Are The Top Rebecca Yarros Books?

(Check out also the Upcoming Rebecca Yarros Books)

Iron Flame (The Empyrean Book 2), by Rebecca Yarros (2023)

Violet Sorrengail defied expectations by surviving her first year at Basgiath War College, a year designed to eliminate the weak and unworthy. However, the upcoming training promises to be even more challenging, with a vice commandant who's out to personally break her spirit, unless she betrays the one she loves.

Despite her physical disadvantages, Violet's intelligence and indomitable will have proven to be her strongest assets, reminding everyone that dragon riders create their own destinies. Yet, as she uncovers ancient secrets of the War College, she realizes that sheer determination might not be enough this time, with the stakes being higher than ever before.

The second book in the The Empyrean series truly lived up to the expectations set by the first. While it's always challenging for sequels to match the brilliance of their predecessors, this one comes incredibly close. The depth of character development, particularly for Violet, and the intricate weaving of the plot made for a riveting read. The unveiling of ancient secrets added layers of complexity, making the narrative even more compelling.

In the Likely Event, by Rebecca Yarros (2023)

Izzy Astor's routine holiday flight turns extraordinary when she meets her captivating seatmate, Nate Phelan, with whom she feels an instant connection. However, their journey takes a terrifying turn when just ninety seconds post-takeoff, their plane crashes into the Missouri River. This life-altering event sends them on different paths: Nate joins the military, and Izzy ventures into politics.

Their lives intermittently cross, but timing always proves a barrier. It's only during a perilous assignment in Afghanistan, with Nate responsible for Izzy's safety, that their bond is truly tested, rekindling the spark and presenting an opportunity for love.

The book offers a seamless dual narrative that switches between past and present timelines, detailing the evolving relationship between Izzy and Nate. It is marked by moments of tension, and presents the characters' imperfections, making them more authentic.

Fourth Wing (The Empyrean Book 1), by Rebecca Yarros (2023)

In the cutthroat environment of Basgiath War College, young Violet Sorrengail finds herself thrown into the challenge of becoming a dragon rider, a role far removed from her intended life in the Scribe Quadrant. Originally destined for a peaceful existence among books, she's now ordered by her stern general mother to compete with other candidates, many of whom would readily eliminate her for their own advantage or simply due to her maternal lineage.

As a smaller and fragile candidate, Violet faces greater risks, especially since dragons usually incinerate those they deem fragile. Amidst the internal competition, she also grapples with external threats: a burgeoning war, a kingdom's weakening defenses, and a mounting death count.

As each day unfolds, Violet senses a disturbing secret lurking within the leadership. In this perilous world, alliances shift unpredictably, and survival means constant vigilance. There are only two outcomes at Basgiath: graduation or death.

Rebecca Yarros' Fourth Wing is every bit as thrilling as you've heard. It offers readers a rich tapestry of action, enchantment, and romance that is simply unputdownable. However, it's best suited for mature readers, given its liberal use of profanities. The protagonist, Violet, is an intriguing character I quickly grew attached to. Despite her physical vulnerabilities, arising from past health issues, she's thrust into a challenging path instead of her preferred vocation as a scribe.

This book is a riveting blend of magical lore, political intrigue, and deep-rooted romance.

Reason To Believe, by Rebecca Yarros (2022)

However, Knox surprises her by arriving a month ahead of schedule. In a twist, he proposes they pretend to be in a relationship to ensure the brothers aren’t separated by the system. Now, every emotion and secret matters.

With the backdrop of a town reeling from the loss of its iconic firefighter crew, past emotions and unexpected events make for a complicated situation. The teacher's deep-seated love for Knox, their shared history, and his sudden proposal intensify the stakes. Their attempt to keep the siblings together threatens to unearth buried feelings and relationships.

The Things We Leave Unfinished, by Rebecca Yarros (2021)

The narrative of The Things We Leave Unfinished is a poignant exploration of love transcending time. Yarros intricately weaves the past with the present, drawing a parallel between two love stories set decades apart. The unique point of this story is its ability to traverse time, yet maintain a coherent emotional thread that binds the characters across generations.

In this narrative, Yarros delicately unveils the vulnerabilities of her characters, making the reader privy to their deepest fears and desires. The storytelling is rich and evocative, painting a vivid picture of enduring love amidst the trials of time. The juxtaposition of past and present love stories provides a unique perspective on the timeless essence of love and the sacrifices it entails.

The Last Letter, by Rebecca Yarros (2019)

The Last Letter is a heart-wrenching tale of love blossoming amidst grief and loss. Yarros skillfully navigates the turbulent waters of emotions as her characters find solace and love in each other after a shared tragedy. The strong point of this story is its raw emotional intensity, coupled with a realistic depiction of healing and hope.

The narrative unfolds with a gentle grace, allowing the reader to walk alongside the characters as they journey through the stages of grief, eventually finding a sliver of hope in each other's company. The tender love story that unfolds is a testament to Yarros' ability to portray love as a beacon of hope amidst despair, showcasing her mastery in exploring human emotions.

Beyond What is Given (Flight & Glory Book 3), by Rebecca Yarros (2015)

The story was a masterfully crafted whirlwind of emotions, evoking tears and striking deep chords within me. I've appreciated every installment of Yarros's Flight and Glory series, but Grayson and Sam's tale gripped my heart uniquely from the beginning. Grayson Masters, for me, stood out as the ultimate flyboy of the series. His blend of rugged looks, brooding demeanor, and unexpected tenderness coupled with his chivalry made him utterly irresistible.

The weight of his burdens, showcased by his selfless nature and unwavering nobility, tore at my heartstrings. Witnessing his struggles and heartaches, I felt an overwhelming sense of injustice for his plight and was profoundly moved by his story.

Eyes Turned Skyward (Flight & Glory Book 2), by Rebecca Yarros (2014)

Twenty-year-old Paisley Donovan is determined to complete her Bucket List, despite sharing a heart condition with her late sister. Her life takes an exhilarating turn when Jagger Bateman saves her from a near-drowning incident, igniting an intense connection between them.

However, complications arise as Paisley is the daughter of the commanding general and is dating Jagger's greatest rival at the country's most challenging flight school. Torn between her heart's desires and the potential risks, Paisley faces a difficult choice, knowing that one wrong move could lead to dire consequences.

Paisley, living with her late sister's heart condition, is drawn to Jagger, a daring pilot, despite being involved with his flight school rival and being the daughter of his commanding officer.

Full Measures (Flight & Glory Book 1), by Rebecca Yarros (2014)

Ember Howard, raised for twenty years as an army brat, is confronted with the devastating reality of her father's death when soldiers appear at her door. With her mother unraveling, the responsibility of holding the family together falls squarely on Ember's shoulders. Just as things seem insurmountable, Josh Walker, a hockey star and her new next-door neighbor, steps into her life. His presence becomes a balm to her pain, offering comfort with just a glance or touch.

Their connection is undeniable, but a secret Josh harbors threatens to shatter their newfound bond. Ember is faced with a difficult decision: determine if the love they share is worth the potential heartbreak that could come from Josh's hidden truth.

As a reader, I was deeply moved, shedding genuine tears, and left in awe of its raw beauty. The depiction of military service, sacrifice, and grief resonated profoundly. I found Ember's character especially relatable, with her selflessness and commitment to her family. Josh Walker, with his perfect blend of a bad boy image and a heart of gold, is a character that is bound to steal readers' hearts.

This is a book that will make you smile and cry, but every emotion it evokes is worth it. I strongly urge everyone to read this masterpiece and share their thoughts on it.

Chapter 1

Abingdon, Virginia

The quaint town of Abingdon lay blanketed under a serene layer of powdery snow. Ice-coated cobblestone streets wound between sloped-roof shops and historic buildings. The peaceful scene exuded an old-world charm, as if frozen in time.

Nestled amidst the picturesque storefronts was the Blue Ridge Café, a cherished establishment left behind by Lily’s late parents. Now, after years of navigating impersonal corporate jobs in bustling cities, Lily stood outside the nostalgic café once more, staring up at the snow-laden roof.

Frigid air pierced her fair skin through her stylish coat as memories flooded over her. She inhaled the mingled scents of roasted coffee beans and cinnamon wafting on the icy breeze. The aroma transported her back to fond memories made within these walls as a child.

She pictured her parents’ smiling faces illuminated by the glow of fairy lights as they hosted lively holiday celebrations. Patrons crowded inside, chatting amiably while frost gathered on the windowpanes. A younger Lily peeked out from the kitchen, proudly helping her mother ice sugar cookies.

With a bittersweet pang, Lily realized how much she had missed this place. It represented the warmth and community she had always taken for granted until years adrift in sprawling cities left her spirit hollow.

Stepping inside, Lily drew a sharp breath as the past enveloped her. The interior remained untouched, still suspended in time. Pale winter light filtering through frosted windows glinted off polished mahogany tables and antique chandeliers.

Lily pictured ghosts of patrons lingering at the counter, her father serving them cheerfully. Her mother bustled around nearby, exchanging friendly chatter. The mental images constricted her heart with nostalgia.

Lily’s slender fingers trembled as she traced the well-worn countertop, picturing her father going through the same motions countless times. She could almost see his smiling reflection on the polished surface. Her vision blurred with hot tears.

The jingle of bells announced Samuel’s entry, jolting Lily from her reminiscing. She discreetly dabbed at her eyes before facing this new arrival from her past.

Lily’s pulse quickened at the sight of Samuel’s athletic build, his muscular arms on display even through the wool coat that shielded him from the icy chill outside. His close-trimmed beard only partially obscured the innate wisdom and compassion radiating from his kind eyes.

Those striking blue eyes had once brimmed with playful spirit during their childhood escapades around this very café, Lily recalled. Now, they held the gravity and responsibility of shepherding their small community as pastors.

Yet as Samuel met her gaze, a glimmer of that familiar boyish warmth surfaced again when he said gently, “It’s good to see you back, Lily.” Unspoken emotion roughened his voice.

“You too, Samuel,” Lily managed faintly, the words scraping her tight throat. She hoped he couldn’t discern the tears she had hurriedly blinked away moments before.

How many complex feelings simmered beneath those simple greetings after so much time apart, so much left unresolved? The air hung heavy with the weight of words still unspoken between them.

An awkward silence swelled. Lily fidgeted with a stray thread on her scarf, unsure how to bridge the distance forged over the years away, chasing separate dreams. Her heart thrummed with a tempest of emotions.

Finally, Samuel gestured to a table with an air of ceremoniousness as if they were two dignitaries attempting to negotiate a treaty.

“Shall we sit and catch up?” he asked with a tentative yet warm smile. Relief flooded Lily at the polite offer of reconciliation.

“Please,” she replied gratefully. Lily loosened her scarf and shed her wool coat before settling onto the creaky wooden chair across from Samuel. She eyed him discreetly as he removed his own outerwear.

Even with time’s inevitable changes etched onto his features, Lily found him just as handsome as the mischievous boy who had occupied many of her adolescent daydreams. The realization sent her pulse skittering oddly.

She couldn’t help admiring the way Samuel’s beard accentuated his sturdy jawline and kind eyes. Her fingers twitched with the startling urge to reach out and stroke along his bearded cheek. Lily quickly tucked her hands in her lap, flustered.

Mercifully, Samuel broke the tense silence first. “I can hardly believe you’re back after so long. But I’m glad,” he mused. “We’ve all missed you here.”

His earnest words coaxed a fragile smile from Lily. “It feels a little strange being back after so long away,” she admitted. “Kind of like stepping into a memory. But also comforting, like coming home.”

Samuel regarded her pensively across the table that separated them. “And how have you been holding up since everything happened with your parents?” he asked delicately after a reflective pause. “I was so very sorry to hear about the accident.”

Lily tensed, staring down at her clenched hands. She focused on steadying her uneven breathing before responding quietly.

“Honestly? Some days are still a real struggle without them,” she confessed with difficulty, her vision blurring with tears. “The grief comes in waves. I just wish so much they could be here now.”

When a single tear escaped Lily’s cheek, Samuel immediately covered her tightly clasped hands with one of his broad, calloused ones. The simple gesture of comfort nearly undid her, but Lily clung fiercely to her composure.

She focused on the soothing warmth of Samuel’s skin against her own, where their hands touched. His sturdy presence radiated calmness and compassion, just as it had throughout their childhood escapades.

“I can’t imagine how difficult that has been for you,” Samuel said gently after giving her a moment to collect herself. “But I know your parents would be so very proud of you for having the courage and strength to come back here. This place always was their pride and joy, but even more so were you, Lily.”

Lily inhaled shakily and offered him a watery but sincere smile, incredibly touched by his kindness. She had nearly forgotten this innate compassion and insight that had marked Samuel as a proper spiritual guide from a young age.

Already, she could feel her battered spirit healing just from being near him again after so many years spent adrift and alone. He had always been her safe harbor in any storm, even when they were just children.

After taking another moment to fully compose herself, Lily turned the conversation to Samuel’s life and time away. She was eager to shift the focus of her own raw grief for a bit.

“So, tell me, what have you been up to all these years since we went our separate ways?” she asked brightly, hoping the lingering redness of her eyes didn’t reveal the inner turmoil still churning within.

Samuel leaned back in his chair and stroked his bearded chin, gathering his thoughts. Lily stared at the distracting motion.

“Well, attending seminary school was definitely a big change of pace,” Samuel began contemplatively. “The quiet campus in the countryside felt so removed from everything familiar. It definitely took some adjusting after our small-town upbringing.”

Lily snapped her focus back to the conversation, genuinely intrigued to learn more about this phase of Samuel’s life she knew so little about.

“That must have been an intensive program of study,” she remarked, hoping her interest sounded natural rather than prying.

“Absolutely, the curriculum was quite rigorous,” Samuel chuckled good-naturedly, either not noticing her scrutiny or politely ignoring it.

“But those long days of studying and mentoring prepared me for returning home and taking on this pastoral role,” he said.

Samuel’s kind eyes took on a look of sincere meaning. It has been gratifying to be trusted with spiritually guiding this community. My congregation makes all those hours of academic work and examinations worthwhile.”

Lily’s expression softened into an affectionate smile at the passion so clear in Samuel’s voice when speaking about supporting the church members who depended on him. She could relate to that sense of purpose he had clearly found.

“It sounds like you truly have found your calling,” Lily remarked warmly. “I’m sure you must be touching so many lives here as pastor.”

Pink tinged Samuel’s bearded cheeks at her praise, and Lily found herself charmed by this evidence that traces of his youthful shyness remained.

“I just try my best to emulate the grace, compassion, and wisdom Reverend Mills always exhibited during our childhood,” Samuel replied modestly. “Though, of course, I still have much more to learn from those wiser than myself.”

Lily’s smile widened, feeling endeared. Even as adults, some things hadn’t changed. Samuel still saw the good in everyone, rarely giving himself enough credit. And the way his face had lit up discussing mentoring local youth told her what a natural caretaker he was.

“The joy you clearly get from guiding the younger generation says enough about your spiritual gifts,” Lily said affectionately. “Your congregation is truly blessed to have you, Samuel.”

The flush on Samuel’s bearded cheeks deepened at her heartfelt words. He took a quick sip of coffee before gesturing for her to share her journey since they had parted ways.

Lily sobered slightly, realizing her experiences contained far less fulfillment or passion than Samuel’s sense of divine purpose. Suddenly self-conscious, she traced the rim of her coffee mug as she attempted to summarize years wasted in unfulfilling corporate jobs in the sprawling city.

Lily confessed, feeling increasingly lonely in such impersonal environments yet lacking the courage or direction to seek something more meaningful.

“It was like I just got stuck on autopilot, passively allowing life to happen around me rather than intentionally living,” Lily admitted with a heavy sigh. She kept her eyes downcast, afraid to see disappointment or judgment in Samuel’s piercing blue gaze.

But when she risked a glance upward, she only found compassion radiating back at her. Samuel had propped his bearded chin on one broad hand and was listening intently, his focus unwavering.

“That must have been an incredibly isolating experience,” he said when she had finished her recap. “I admire you for trusting your instincts enough to seek a better path by coming back here.”

Lily bit her bottom lip as she mulled over his insightful words. “I suppose I finally realized I couldn’t keep ignoring that inner voice urging me to take a chance again,” she mused.

“I only hope I can live up to that leap of faith now I’m back,” Lily confessed, meeting Samuel’s gaze. “Everything still feels so uncertain. But maybe you’re right that the answers will come if I just give it time.”

Samuel nodded slowly, holding her gaze with certainty. “You’ll find your direction again,” he said. “Just listen to your heart and have patience with the process. I have faith in you, Lily.”

His calm conviction flowed over her like a soothing balm, temporarily easing her turbulent doubts. Lily clung to it like a life preserver, keeping her afloat. Samuel knew how to steady her spirit with a look or a word. She had missed that more than she realized.

By now, dusk’s hazy light had faded to night outside the frosted windows. The inky darkness and twinkling stars seemed encroaching, hinting that their time together was drawing to a close.

Lily tamped down the irrational urge to reach across the table separating them and grasping Samuel’s sturdy hand. She longed to extend this connection a little more.

Seeking an excuse to linger with him, Lily leaned forward and placed her hand lightly atop Samuel’s weathered knuckles. His skin radiated a comforting warmth that she tried not to focus on.

“Do you remember many of our childhood adventures here?” Lily asked with an attempt at a casual smile, hoping Samuel wouldn’t notice the way her pulse had quickened.

Fortunately, Samuel appeared distracted by his own memories. With a faraway look in his eyes, he turned his palm upward to meet hers in a loose grip, causing Lily’s heart to flutter.

“Of course,” he said wistfully. “This place holds so many fond memories for me, too.”

Samuel’s tone was low with emotion. Lily shivered when he stroked his thumb across her knuckles, clearly lost in their shared past.

Desperate to ground herself, Lily prompted, “Remember the giant snow fort we built out back one winter?” She giggled girlishly, the sound embarrassingly high-pitched to her own ears.

Samuel’s eyes lit up with joy at the nostalgic reminder, making Lily smile. The tension slowly dissipated.

Remember when we thought putting milkshakes in there to keep them cold was such a great idea?” Samuel chuckled, reluctant to relinquish the comforting grip of their hands.

“I’d nearly forgotten about that,” he mused with a shake. “My mother was so confused when I stumbled inside covered in sticky chocolate syrup.”

Lily’s laugh became more breathless at the physical reminder of Samuel’s touch gliding along her sensitive skin. Flustered by her body's instinctive response, she gently withdrew her hand from Samuel's loose hold, pretending to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

“We did some crazy stuff back then,” Lily replied, hoping to sound affectionate and not shaky. She tried to steer the discussion to safer, more neutral territory.

“Remember when we staged that little play in my parents’ cafe after hours, and my mother nearly had a heart attack when she caught us?”

Samuel winced with exaggeration. “Oh goodness, I think I’ve blocked that one out,” he said, playing along at the memory. “We really were the troublemaking pair, weren’t we?”

His eyes reflected the faraway glint that did funny things to Lily’s insides. It reminded her of the tender looks they exchanged as curious adolescents before life’s paths diverged.

“We certainly had our share of misadventures,” Lily acknowledged, her playful nostalgia softening into something more tender. “But we were very close back then. I’ve really missed that…”

She faltered, throat clenching up unexpectedly on the admission. Lily realized suddenly just how very much she had missed Samuel’s steadfast presence and understanding over the lonely years.

Samuel's teasing expression softened into something more serious, as if he could sense the shift in her mood. “I’ve missed it too, Lily,” he confessed quietly. “Very much so.”

The air between them changed, growing heavy with unspoken longing. Lily shyly met Samuel’s tender gaze, pulse-quickening as if she were a smitten teenager all over again. She worried he could surely hear her frantic heart.

Uncertain what to say or do next, Lily felt relief when Samuel cleared his throat gruffly and withdrew his hand to bring their loaded moment to an end.

“I should let you get some rest,” he announced, glancing outside at the night sky as he moved to stand and gather his belongings.

Disappointment set in, but Lily smiled politely as she walked Samuel to the door, shoving down the confusing emotions his presence had ignited. She hesitated, hand on the frame, watching as he buttoned his wool coat.

Overwhelmed by the desire to prolong their connection, Lily reached out to grasp Samuel’s sturdy forearm.

“Thank you again for today, for everything,” she said earnestly, hoping he would sense her sincerity. “Having your support here during this transition means the world.”

Samuel’s eyes creased with shared emotion as he covered her tiny hand with his larger one. “You’ve always had my support, Lil. And you always will.”

The casual nickname sent shivers skating down Lily’s spine. She reluctantly dropped her hand back to her side when Samuel gave a final parting wave and headed into the moonlit darkness.

Lily watched until his broad silhouette disappeared entirely from sight. Only then did she close the cafe door and lean against it weakly, ignoring how her legs had gone unsteady.

Being with Samuel again after so long had felt so easy, so familiar, like coming home. However, their dynamic now appeared more delicate and hesitant, pulsating with an undercurrent of attraction that hadn't been there during their youth.

With a weary but lighter heart, Lily retreated up the creaky stairs to her small apartment. The coming days held so much uncertainty. But Samuel’s compassion had rekindled hopes she thought long extinguished.

Maybe with him there, she could find her purpose again. Lily clung to this delicate hope as she drifted off, feeling a sense of peace washing over her.

Despite the uncertainty of the path ahead, she found comfort in knowing she had someone by her side this time. Samuel's presence gave her a sense of stability, making her believe she could accomplish anything. The future seemed to glow with newfound promise.

You only need one book signed by Christina Lauren to fall in love with the storytelling capabilities and funky plot twists. There’s a bit of humor, plenty of young adult fiction, as well as romance and action, basically, a bit of everything.

Unveiling Christina Lauren: The Dynamic Duo Behind the Pen Name

What most people don’t know is the fact that Christina Lauren is not one author. Sure, you’ll find quite a few Christina Lauren books, but the pen name is actually used by two writing partners and best friends, Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings, who together have authored 18 New York Times bestselling novels in both YA and women's fiction genres.

Lauren Billings, also known as Lo, holds a doctorate in neuroscience from UC Irvine and has previously conducted research on neurodegeneration in aging. She lives in California with her family and two dogs. Christina Hobbs, affectionately called PQ by Lo, previously worked in a junior high counseling office and now spends her time writing or watching BTS videos. She resides in Utah with her husband and daughter, and is passionate about boy bands and glitter.

The duo has had their books translated into over 30 languages. With these thoughts in mind, let me introduce you to some of my favorite releases.

I have arranged the following Christina Lauren books in reverse chronological order for your convenience.

What Are The Top Christina Lauren Books?

The True Love Experiment, by Christina Lauren (2023)

To be honest with you, I strongly believe this book will be made into a movie at some point, it’s that good. As one of my favorite Christina Lauren books, it tells Fizzy’s story. She feels a bit lost. She’s a successful romance writer, but she has never experienced what she’s preaching for.

Sure, she’s felt lust and passion before, but she had never experienced those butterflies, those feelings of always thinking about him. And then, her constant optimism slowly turns into pessimism, as she realizes she has no clue what love feels like.

But then, she meets Connor, a filmmaker, and single father. He's asked to create a reality TV show based on love, but he has no clue where to start. When the two meet, they realize this could be the perfect scenario.

There’s only one problem. He’s pretty good at making her fall for him, but his feelings are not going in the right direction. From this point on, I’ll let you discover the outcome yourself.

Something Wilder, by Christina Lauren (2023)

Lily’s childhood hasn’t been great. Her father Duke, a famous treasure hunter, hasn't been around too much. She's grown up without much patience and, despite her father's job, without too much money too. But she's not stupid, though.

Using her father’s hand-drawn maps, she decides to start a local tourism business, guiding tourists around less known areas. Moreover, on a side note, she also guides amateur treasure hunters through the canyons in Utah.

She has a dream though, buying her father’s ranch, the one he got rid of years ago. However, while her jobs do help with the bills, there’s not enough left to fulfill her dreams. When her childhood love Leo turns up, she’s all about business, despite his attempts to get her to fall in love with him.

And that’s when the action begins.

The Soulmate Equation, by Christina Lauren (2021)

This is one of my favorite Christina Lauren books and follows single mom Jess and the fine line between fate and decision. She plays it safe, loves numbers, and takes no risks. Therefore, she's not really interested in getting back on the dating scene. After all, her family wasn't great, so she’s not too confident.

But then, she finds out about GeneticAlly, similar to some reality TV shows these days. Basically, the company grabs DNA from more people to find the perfect match. This makes sense, and after all, there are no risks at all, so she’s up for the challenge.

Surprisingly for everyone, she's matching the GeneticAlly founder by 98%. She already knows Doctor River, and she finds it difficult to believe. He's far from what she would expect from her soulmate. However, GeneticAlly comes with an offer she just can’t refuse.

Whether it's money or true love, I'll let you find out yourself what happens in this spicy story. And trust me, if you think you know how it ends, I recommend reading it first, and you'll be surprised.

In a Holidaze, by Christina Lauren (2020)

Christmas is the most beautiful time of the year, but not for everyone. Maelyn lives with her parents, and she hates everything about her life. She's been terribly failed in love, while her job pays the bills, but has nothing to do with her dreams. In other words, she’s a total mess.

This is the last Christmas she’ll spend at the cabin in Utah where her family has always spent holidays. Driving away in tears, she asks the universe for a change. What’s going to make her happy? What’s going to show her what happiness looks like? And then, she gets a sign.

She’s involved in an accident and passes out without remembering anything. When she wakes up, she’s on an airplane, going on holiday to the beloved cabin. It’s a time loop that keeps repeating again and again. There’s definitely something she’s doing wrong, but she has to figure out what.

She’ll have to find happiness one way or another in order to break free. Will she manage to do it?

The Honey-Don't List, by Christina Lauren (2020)

Carey is nearly an expert in home remodeling. After all, she’s worked for some of the most famous names in the industry. But deep down inside her, she’s a country girl, despite her vision in terms of interior design.

Now, the design gurus she works for are about to take the world by storm. Everyone knows who they are. They’re about to launch a book too, but there’s one major problem. Melissa and Rusty hate each other, despite posing as a perfect couple.

They're about to go on a tour, and they take Carey with them, as well as James, a structural engineer. They both dislike the idea, but none of them can quit. Carey needs the money and insurance, while James has been promised the role of a lifetime.

Get ready for a cheeky adventure full of quirky fun and a bit of romance.

Twice in a Blue Moon, by Christina Lauren (2019)

Sam and Tate discover love on vacation abroad. However, this isn't just a summer love. It's not one of those new relationships where they discover themselves. Instead, it's one of those where they share everything, their goals in life, passions, literally everything.

Time flies, though and they take different paths in life. Tate is a movie star's daughter and follows the same road. However, no one can tell what the future has in store for them. And 14 years later, while she still thinks about her first love, she finds him.

He’s there, just as confident. He’s looking at her, but she can’t forget the past. He betrayed her. Now, she’s asking herself whether she’s about to make the same mistake again. Or maybe he’s changed, who knows? After all, he’s a grown man now.

I won't give you too many spoilers, but you'll love the outcome. Besides, you'll recognize Christina Lauren’s remarkable signature straight away.

The Unhoneymooners, by Christina Lauren (2019)

Olive has never been a lucky girl. Her career? Terrible. Her love life? Inexistent. Pretty much nothing works for her. But then, she has a twin sister, Amy. And Ami is the opposite, she feels like the luckiest person in the world.

Besides, she’s managed to get the perfect wedding by winning a series of competitions online.

Things get a bit messy when Ami asks Olive to spend the day with Ethan, the best man. However, Olive and Ethan are sworn enemies, so that’s when the nightmare begins. Olive thinks she’ll survive. After all, 24 hours won’t be that bad.

Her bad luck just won't let go, though. Everyone at the wedding gets food poisoning, apart from Olive and Ethan. And now there’s a honeymoon up for grabs, but no one can really go.

The two decide to put their hatred aside in order to enjoy this beautiful vacation in Hawaii. A bunch of small mistakes and issues lead to a plethora of misunderstandings. Now, Olive and Ethan must pretend they're in a relationship in order to save appearances.

Love and Other Words, by Christina Lauren (2018)

Macy is extremely ambitious and tries to plan every little aspect of her life. She works like a slave in order to build a career in medicine, but she also wants to marry an older and more responsible man, ideally a financially secure one.

She has experienced love before, but nothing really lasts. Now, she runs into Elliot, the first love of her life and probably the only man she's truly cared about. Her heart takes over, and her well detailed plan starts falling apart.

The problem is he’s already broken her heart in the past, so she doesn’t want to make the same mistake again.

The best part about this book? The action floats between then and now. You’ll be surprised by some of their reactions, but then you’ll understand why they do this and that. Small references to the past will fill the gaps and give you a better image, definitely one of the best Christina Lauren books.

The post Top 8 Lauren Asher Books (In Order) For 2023 appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

An overactive creativity, plenty of imagination, and unexpected plot twists out of nowhere, that's pretty much how I could describe Lauren Asher. Known for her fast-paced action stories, she's one of the few authors who will manage to hook you up from the first chapter.

And trust me when I say that you'll be excited throughout the whole book, devouring one page after another. Lauren Asher is the type of author who knows how to trigger your emotions and bring in a bit of steam, just what I’m looking for in a relaxing book.

Who is Lauren Asher?

Lauren Asher is a writer with a vivid imagination, and she spends much of her free time reading and writing. Her goal is to travel to the places she writes about in her stories. Lauren loves to create characters that are flawed yet relatable, and her stories are fast-paced with plenty of angst, steam, and emotion. In addition to writing and reading, Lauren is also a big fan of Formula 1 racing.

In her downtime, Lauren enjoys watching YouTube, binging on old episodes of Parks and Rec, and searching Yelp for new restaurants to try out. She is most productive after her morning coffee and will never pass up an opportunity for a nap. She is also a very shy author since she have close to zero personal appearances except some rare opportunities.

She loves series, and unlike other authors, I think she does a pretty good job at keeping readers entertained, rather than feeling like she's dragging stories. With these thoughts in mind, here are my favorite and upcoming Lauren Asher books and what you can expect from their stories.

Love Redesigned (Lakefront Billionaires), by Lauren Asher (2023)

Julian is an attractive man but also the devil hidden behind a beautiful face. He's a rich brat with a few good business ideas. Dahlia, on the other hand, hates him. In fact, he's convinced that if he ever caught fire, she would most likely throw even more fuel on him.

One day, she returns to the small town of Lake Wisteria after a failed relationship, but she fully intends to avoid him. Knowing she’s back in town, he tries the same thing. After all, they've always been in a conflict, even when they were kids, and their families were friends.

But one day, he makes a serious proposal. He finds a beautiful historic house that needs renovation. He needs an interior designer, but he also knows that if Dahlia manages to find her creative spark, she’ll leave the town. It sounds like the perfect scenario.

The project will triple the profits, while his long-term frenemy will go away. The problem is things don’t always go as planned.

Final Offer (Dreamland Billionaires), by Lauren Asher (2023)

This is the final book in the Dreamland Billionaires series. Needless to say, it’s my favorite and brings in a top notch ending to a superlative series. It tells the story of Alana and Callahan. Now, let me give you a bit of background for each of them.

Callahan is one of the Kane brothers. Everyone's talking about him, but no one dares to say anything in front of him. He's well built, good looking, and rich. Everyone knows him, but no one really knows who he is. Except for Lana.

Now, moving on to Lana, she's his best childhood friend, and she knows pretty much everything about him. Now, she's in love with him, although he nearly broke her heart. The two never expected to meet again, but Callahan's grandfather passed away, so he's back in town.

He needs to sort the old lake house, but here comes the surprise. Lana claims to own the house as well. I won’t give you the ending, but trust me, it’s going to be amazing.

Terms and Conditions (Dreamland Billionaires), by Lauren Asher (2022)

The best part about the Dreamland Billionaires series is the fact that while there is a bit of connection between books, they’re not really related. Each book follows a different set of characters, so you can read whichever you want without feeling clueless.

I think this series got better and better with each release, which is the opposite of what normally happens. Anyway, let me get into it. This time, you have Declan and Iris. Declan is likely to inherit a media empire, but his grandfather’s inheritance clause kicks in.

Declan had to get married and get a child. Mission impossible! Until his assistant Iris decides she wants to help. In theory, the plan is simple. Move in, marry, get a baby, and set some rules, only to ensure there wouldn't be any issues at all.

There's one problem, though. Both of them start caring for each other, but they don’t want to break their rules either. After all, this is a business partnership. While it may look like you can guess the ending, get ready for a few plot twists on the way too.

The Fine Print (Dreamland Billionaires), by Lauren Asher (2021)

This is one of the first Lauren Asher books I’ve ever read. It’s also the book that got me into the Dreamland Billionaires series, as well as the release that convinced me about her skills and fast-paced writing style.

Rowan is one of the billionaire brothers of the series. His mission is to make dreams come true, from luxury hotels and theme parks to production companies. His biggest challenge is to renovate Dreamland, and he knows this could be the project of a lifetime.

He seeks help from Zahra, but hiring her wasn’t necessarily his best idea. She landed the job by mistake, after criticizing Dreamland in an honest review. All in all, one thing leads to another, and Rowan ends up kissing her.

Despite the attraction, Zahra is ready to prove that money can’t fix everything. And this is when the action begins. There's tension, but there's also attraction. He's a difficult boss, and she's an annoying employee, but somehow, it works.

Redeemed (Dirty Air Special Edition), by Lauren Asher (2021)

Although this is the fourth book in the Dirty Air series, it’s a standalone story that’s not connected to the others. Just like other Lauren Asher books, it tells the story from two different points of view. This time, you have Santiago and Chloe.

Santiago had the perfect life, but one mistake ruined everything for him. He was the most sought-after bachelor in town. Now, he’s just a shadow, a monster who no one wants to see. However, his life is about to take an unusual turn when Chloe breaks into his home and, well, his life.

Chloe was interested in finding her father, and all clues took her to Italy. But one bad decision brought her into Santiago's life. Now, the two are stuck in a fake relationship. Get ready for a few quirky adventures and plenty of humor, but only until things get steamy.

As we all know it, a fake relationship can’t be fake for too long.

Wrecked (Dirty Air Special Edition), by Lauren Asher (2020)

Jax is the type of man most women would avoid. Sure, he’s a good looking man, but at the end of the day, everything about him could be seen as a red flag. Literally, he has screaming problems. He likes adrenaline, alcohol, pills, you name it. If there’s something women dislike in men, he has it.

Jax has an addictive personality, but there’s a reason behind all these. He finds it impossible to deal with his pain without his dirty little helpers. However, he’s successful. And one day, his team hires Elena. She’s meant to help him fix his reputation.

Initially, she finds the job quite appealing. She's about to work for a Formula 1 team, and she's about to show off her PR skills. None of them expected this collaboration to turn into a war zone. She tries to find his weakness, while he struggles with his new addiction, her.

Collided (Dirty Air Special Edition), by Lauren Asher (2020)

I think it’s pretty obvious the author has a thing for Formula 1. After all, I can easily think of a few Lauren Asher books based on Formula 1 stories, and this is one of them. Liam is one of the golden stars in Formula 1, but no one really knows that he's actually a fraud.

He’s made to look seductive and devious, probably one of the best build characters in Lauren Asher’s books.

Then, you have Sophie. She’s definitely a fantasy, but her presence around Liam is likely to ruin his career. She’s not his friend, but his rival. And he knows he needs to resist her. Everyone knows they won’t do well together, but the tension is quite difficult to resist.

Although the concept is pretty similar to other books, I think this is by far the most intense book from Lauren Asher. Everything happens so fast that you just don't know what to pay attention to. It's very realistically written and, by far one of the best releases in her portfolio.

Throttled (Dirty Air Special Edition), by Lauren Asher (2020)

The first book in the Dirty Air series is one of the most intense ones too, mainly because of all the plot twists hitting out of nowhere. Noah is new to Formula 1. Everyone can see his talent, but he’s still young and has a lot to learn. He’s determined to do whatever it takes to be the first.

His approach is truly professional, well focused, and less likely to be distracted by anything. No one can go through to him. Now, Noah is also Maya's brother's teammate. Maya has a crush on him, but she knows it’s nearly impossible to get to him.

It’s not like Noah hasn’t noticed her, but his career is simply more important. In his eyes, she’s nothing but a random temptation. She wants love and fireworks, he wants to destroy everything, but release tension. It’s a destructive relationship, but if they play their cards right, it might actually work.

Best Quotes From Lauren Asher Books

Zahra’s it for me. I know it with everything in me, and my intuition has never been wrong before. There’s nothing in the world I’ll find more beautiful than her. Not the sun. Not the moon. Not even the entire galaxy compares to the light she radiates wherever she goes.

―Lauren Asher, The Fine Print

How about ten words then?” I laugh. “I’d like to see you try.” “I am falling in love with you, Iris Elizabeth Kane.

Lauren Asher, Terms and Conditions

I think we owe it to ourselves to unapologetically love who we are no matter what. Because if you don’t love yourself, then why do you expect anyone else to?

Final Thoughts on the best Lauren Asher Books

You’ll notice a bit of similarity in more Lauren Asher books. The idea is the same, two souls that hate each other, but with a very fine line between love and hate.

However, each story is unique, with its own action and plot twists. And the fast-paced effort makes everything even better.

A Slavic-Inspired Fantasy Novel with Elements of Mystery and Romance

Those beautiful eyes, shining the light of silver.

Oldřich Lýnhart, the King of Lemaria, hires a group of hunters to dispatch a monster, hidden deep in the forests of Podkray. Salvyra, a girl of seventeen, finds herself at one end of the conflict – she who loves that monster; she who would die for that monster; she who would kill for that monster. That monster is none other than Vilod, a veritable artist and saint, whose only sins are his disfigured looks and divergent nature. The group of hunters, called the Seílgars, care not for a monster's personality. Quick to judge, they have only one thing in mind. Extermination.

Referin Tállier, a member of the Seílgars, stands in the middle of it all. After being unable to prevent a tragedy, Referin starts questioning the nature of things. Not fate but choices bring Salvyra and Referin together. Pelted by dangerous creatures, moral conundrums, and encounters with eccentric characters, the two of them end up sharing everything; personal growth, moral ambiguity, and a determination to keep moving. Despite the obstacles. And to the end.

PROLOGUE

Oldřich Lýnhart, the King of Lemaria, approached the balustrade of his terrace, the hem of his long robe billowing in the afternoon wind. He sighed, rested his hands atop the railing’s cold surface, and gazed into the distance.

A dark forest of spruce and pine stretched as far as he could see, all the way up to the Slazicy Mountains encircling the enormous valley. To the west, swift currents of the River Wesna ran between wooded hills and rocky outcrops, sparkling like woven strands of silver. In the middle of the valley, huge plains stretched in all directions, dotted with small settlements and towns, built on the Karina’s and Pavlína’s many banks. The partially-clouded sun had reached the high horizon, lending the world a meek, orange hue. The peaks of the distant massif were coated with snow, shimmering in the dying light like foothills of heaven. Cold wind rustled Oldřich’s hair under the heavy crown on his head.

Yet the crown was not the heaviest burden he bore.

He shifted his gaze down at the courtyard. Amidst trimmed shrubs, flowerbeds of lilies, and pebbled pathways, Mokva and Varimiř were holding a child’s competition, splashing each other with water from an intricately carved stone fountain in the centre of the yard. The fountain comprised a squat plinth, on which a statue of a young man stood proudly, holding up a horn and blowing through it with inspiring vigour. Mokva was making circles around the fountain, trying to catch Varimiř, who was giggling and blowing raspberries at her. She finally caught him and tossed him into the fountain. The boy looked as though he would cry, but he burst into laughter instead and pulled his sister into the fountain to join him. They splashed in the shallow water like a couple of frogs.

Oldřich turned, abandoning the high terrace, and strode briskly into the half-gloom of his chambers.

The stone walls of his room emanated warmth and were adorned with numerous paintings and richly embroidered tapestries. The paintings depicted landscapes, portraits, battles, and crowded streets, and the tapestries’ deep and tasteful colour palettes juxtaposed the dull, grey walls. A large crimson carpet made most of the spruce floor, and the chamber held a small number of furnishings; a large bed, two nightstands, a malachite table, a small cupboard, and two linen chairs.

Oldřich sauntered over to one of the chairs, occupied it, and poured himself a cupful of wine from a sizeable silver pitcher, which was resting on the lacquered cupboard. He leaned back and began sipping the sweet-sour drink, listening to his children’s laughter down in the courtyard.
