The post Top 6 Mythology Inspired YA Fiction Books For 2024 appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

Among Young Adult fiction books, mythology has always been a fertile ground for storytelling. Gods, goddesses, and ancient myths reimagined for contemporary readers is irresistible.

Mythology in YA fiction is not just about transplanting tales from the past into the present. It’s about reimagining these stories in ways that resonate with today’s readers. These books often use mythology to explore themes like destiny, power, and the complexities of human relationships.

The gods and goddesses in these narratives, whether borrowed from ancient lore or conjured from the depths of an author's imagination, serve as both characters and symbols, illuminating the trials and tribulations of growing up.

What Are The Top Mythology Inspired YA Fiction Books?

Winkle and Aster, by Derek Corsaro (2023)

Winkle and Aster is a captivating tale that connects to Filipino and Mexican folklore and mythology. This book is a mesmerizing journey through a mystical world, seen through the eyes of Periwinkle and Aster Dalisay.

The narrative brilliantly captures the essence of being lost in a world brimming with spirits, folklore, and magic. As the youngest sophomore in a high-performing high school, Periwinkle’s character resonates with anyone who has felt the pressure of expectations and the desire to find one's own path. Her interest in painting, rather than conforming, is a breath of fresh air.

The fire incident that throws her and her sister, Aster, into a black and white world is both literal and metaphorical, representing the chaos and uncertainty of adolescence. The quest for the Abyssal Vine and the challenges they face in this spectral world is a gripping metaphor for the journey towards self-discovery and resilience.

The inclusion of a Filipino water spirit adds a layer of cultural depth and mysticism to this unique story. Corsaro’s book is not just about the adventure but a reflection on spiritual belief, and the unbreakable bond of sisterhood.

Dance of Stars and Ashes, by Nisha J. Tuli (2024)

Dance of Stars and Ashes, the second book in The Nightfire Quartet by Nisha J. Tuli, is a mix of romance and mythology.

The protagonist, Zarya, is a character that embodies strength and vulnerability in equal measure. Her journey of discovering her own ancient and dark magic is enthralling. The depiction of Rabin, a warrior prince with deadly beauty and arrogance, adds layers of complexity to the narrative.

Their dynamic, filled with tension, secrets, and an undeniable connection, is the heartbeat of the story. The portrayal of demons looming over Dharati and the impending ceremony to protect the city set a backdrop of high stakes and suspense.

The exploration of themes such as the power of love, the pursuit of one's destiny, and the battle between light and darkness is done with a delicate yet impactful touch.

Lies We Sing to the Sea, by Sarah Underwood (2023)

This mythological fiction is an exceptional story that brilliantly marries Greek mythology with a poignant YA narrative. The story, centered around Leto, a maiden condemned by Ithaca, unfolds with a depth that is both heart-wrenching and beautiful. The portrayal of Ithaca's vengeful tradition, where maidens are sacrificed to appease Poseidon, is not only gripping but also a clever reinterpretation of Greek lore. Leto's journey from facing death to discovering a mysterious island and meeting Melantho, a girl with the power over the sea, is crafted with such finesse that it left me captivated. Underwood's storytelling is a testament to the power of myths reimagined, offering a fresh perspective on familiar tales.

The themes of lies, love, and tragedy are interwoven seamlessly, making this book a standout in its genre. As a reader, I was particularly impressed by the relationship dynamics and the moral complexities that the characters navigate. The book’s exploration of fate and choice is thought-provoking, making it a must-read for fans of Greek mythology and YA fiction alike. Sarah Underwood's narrative style is both enchanting and evocative, making Lies We Sing to the Sea a legendary debut in the YA realm.

The Immortal Games, by Annaliese Avery (2023)

The Immortal Games by Annaliese Avery is a novel that took my breath away with its exciting blend of mythology and YA romantasy. The concept of the Immortal Games, where humans, known as Tokens, are pawns in a deadly game played by the Gods of Olympus, is both innovative and thrilling.

Ara, the protagonist, is a character of remarkable depth and complexity. Her quest for revenge against the Gods for her sister's death in the Games adds a layer of intensity and emotional depth to the narrative. Avery's portrayal of the Gods, especially Hades, the God of the Underworld, is a brilliant deviation from traditional mythological depictions. Hades, often portrayed as a dark and fearsome deity, is shown here with a nuance that adds to his character’s appeal.

What struck me most about this book is its exploration of themes such as the value of life, living, and compassion. The dynamics between Ara and Hades evolve beautifully, creating a storyline that is not only about survival but also about finding unexpected connections and learning from them. The author's skillful weaving of Greek mythology into a modern setting is commendable, making The Immortal Games a standout novel. Annaliese Avery has crafted a world that is both fantastical and relatable, making it an essential read for fans of mythology-inspired YA fiction.

Lore, by Alexandra Bracken (2021)

Lore is a breathtaking novel that masterfully intertwines Greek mythology with a gripping YA storyline. The novel's premise, where Greek gods are punished to live as mortals and hunted down, is both innovative and thrilling. Lore Perseous, the protagonist, is a character of immense depth, shaped by a past marred with tragedy and betrayal. Her journey from fleeing a world of violence to being pulled back into the brutal Agon hunt over New York City is both compelling and emotionally charged. Bracken's storytelling is vivid, bringing the ancient world into a modern urban setting in a way that feels both fantastical and believable.

What makes Lore stand out is its exploration of power dynamics, destiny, and the humanization of gods. The alliance between Lore and Athena, and their mutual struggle against a formidable enemy, adds layers of intrigue and suspense.

The novel is a fascinating take on the Greek mythos, reimagined with a fresh perspective that captivates from the first page to the last. Alexandra Bracken's skill in crafting a narrative that is both action-packed and emotionally resonant makes Lore a must-read in the mythology-inspired YA genre.

Circe, by Madeline Miller (2020)

Madeline Miller's Circe is, in my opinion, redefining the narrative of one of the most intriguing characters from Greek mythology. This novel is a bold and imaginative retelling of the life of Circe, a figure known from The Odyssey.

Miller's portrayal of Circe is nothing short of revolutionary, presenting her as a complex character with depth and agency. Born into the house of Helios, but lacking the apparent power of her divine relatives, Circe's journey of self-discovery and empowerment is both inspiring and emotional.

What truly captivates me about Circe is its feminist angle, portraying the titular character not just as a sorceress but as a woman navigating a world dominated by gods and men. Her exile to a deserted island becomes a metaphor for her transformation, as she hones her witchcraft and crosses paths with famous mythological figures.

Final Thoughts on Mythology Inspired YA Fiction Books

Reflecting on this collection of mythology-inspired YA fiction, it’s clear that these stories offer more than just escapades into fantastical worlds. They are mirrors reflecting our own world, with all its complexities and beauties. These books are not just about gods and goddesses but about the human experience as seen through the lens of the mythical. They remind us that at the heart of every myth, there is a truth about humanity that is timeless.

These stories stand out as beacons of creativity, weaving together the threads of the ancient and the modern, and inviting young readers to explore realms where the only limit is their imagination.

PROLOGUE

When the lawyer arrived on the scene, her client lay dead on the bathroom floor. Rachel had killed herself by a wall in the ladies’ room. The forensics team swept through the tiles, photographing the body and interviewing potential witnesses. The smell of sanitizers and ammonia prevailed everywhere.

Her client’s body leaned by the wall, all four limbs strewn without life, no doubt of her mortality. Nothing was left for the lawyer except waiting for the autopsy report, which would take weeks. However, right now, she had one more person to see.

The lawyer headed towards the nursery. Tears leveled her eyelids as she paced down the corridor. When she burst in, a nursery staff member stared. “Miss Taylor, what brings…”

The lawyer halted in front of crib number four, where a baby girl rested, barely able to open her eyes. The lawyer reached out and picked up the child, holding her tight. The nursery staff allowed it, even though they were bewildered by the circumstances.

The newborn gently slept without making a sound. The lawyer took her time, but couldn’t stop crying.
With the little baby’s innocence snug so tight, how could she tell this poor soul? Carrie, your mother just committed suicide.

The post Top 16+ Romantasy Books For 2024 In Reverse Chronological Order appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

As a fervent admirer of romantic fantasy, or ‘romantasy' as it's affectionately known, I've always found myself enchanted by the unique blend of heart-fluttering romance and the bewitching allure of fantasy worlds. The genre has a special way of weaving together the thrill of adventure with the intricacies of love, often set in realms that brim with magic, mystery, and sometimes dragons!

In this article, I'll take you through a curated list of the top romantasy books, arranged in reverse chronological order. I picked the first book of the series in each cases. These titles represent the crème de la crème of the genre, each offering a unique escapade into realms where love and magic intertwine.

The Allure of Romantasy

Romantasy has always held a special place in the hearts of readers who yearn for stories that blend the escapism of fantasy with the emotional depth of romance. This genre offers a playground for the imagination, where authors craft worlds with intricate magic systems, mythical creatures, and societies that range from opulent courts to rugged, dragon-filled landscapes. What sets these narratives apart is the central role of romance, often fraught with obstacles and heightened by the fantastical elements at play.

The allure of romantasy lies in its ability to transport readers to worlds where the stakes are high, both in terms of magical conflicts and matters of the heart.

What Are The Top Romantasy Books?

Fourth Wing, by Rebecca Yarros (2023)

In Fourth Wing, Rebecca Yarros introduces us to a world where the elite are dragon riders, trained in a brutal war college. The protagonist, Violet Sorrengail, is an underdog in every sense, facing enormous challenges due to her physical fragility in a world that favors strength. What captivated me most about this book is Violet's journey, not just as a dragon rider aspirant but also as a young woman fighting against prejudices and expectations.

Her relationship with Xaden Riorson, the formidable wingleader, adds an electrifying dynamic to the story. The layers of political intrigue, the looming war, and the mystery surrounding the leadership's secrets create a compelling backdrop for Violet's struggles and triumphs. Yarros has a knack for building tension, both in terms of the plot and the evolving romance, making Fourth Wing a standout addition to the romantasy genre.

Divine Rivals, by Rebecca Ross (2023)

Divine Rivals is a mesmerizing tale where love and war among gods intertwine with the aspirations of young journalists. Rebecca Ross has crafted a world that feels both ancient and immediate, as Iris Winnow and Roman Kitt, rivals at a newspaper, find themselves inadvertently bound by a magical connection. The romance that blossoms between them is beautifully juxtaposed against the backdrop of a divine war. Ross’s ability to blend the personal stakes of Iris and Roman with the larger, mythic conflicts is remarkable.

The book strikes a perfect balance between the enchanting and the heartbreaking, as Iris's journey takes her from struggling to keep her family together to the front lines of a celestial battle. The concept of letters being the medium of their connection adds a poetic touch to their relationship, making “Divine Rivals” a truly unique read in the romantasy genre.

Throne of Glass, by Sarah J. Maas (2023)

Throne of Glass is a book that redefined my expectations from the romantasy genre. The story follows Celaena Sardothien, a fierce assassin with a quest for freedom that is both thrilling and emotionally resonant. Maas has crafted a character in Celaena who is not just lethal and skilled, but also layered with vulnerabilities and a dark past. The romantic elements, especially her evolving relationships with the Crown Prince and the Captain of the Guard, are intricately woven into the narrative, enhancing the depth of her character.

The mystery of the deaths in the castle adds a gripping element of suspense. Maas's world-building is exceptional, creating a land devoid of magic yet brimming with political intrigue and hidden agendas. Throne of Glass stands out for its strong female protagonist, a captivating blend of romance and action, and a well-constructed fantasy world.

Once Upon a Broken Heart, by Stephanie Garber (2023)

In this book Stephanie Garber takes us on a journey filled with love, curses, and the quest for happily ever after. The protagonist, Evangeline Fox, is a character who immediately captures your heart with her belief in true love, despite the odds stacked against her. Garber's storytelling is a beautiful tapestry of emotions, weaving Evangeline's plight with a series of choices that are both haunting and alluring.

The narrative is rich with unexpected twists and turns, blending the ethereal quality of fairy tales with the darker aspects of bargains with immortals. This book not only explores the complexities of love and desire but also the consequences of choices made in moments of desperation. Garber has created a world that is as mesmerizing as it is treacherous, making Once Upon a Broken Heart a standout novel in the romantasy realm.

The Serpent & the Wings of Night, by Carissa Broadbent (2022)

Carissa Broadbent presents a riveting blend of dark fantasy and romance. The protagonist, Oraya, is an adopted human daughter of the Nightborn vampire king, living in a world rife with danger and political intrigue. Her journey to compete in the Kejari, a legendary tournament, is not just about survival but also about self-discovery.

Broadbent's portrayal of Oraya is complex and engaging; she's a character who grapples with her identity in a society where she's seen as less than. The alliance with Raihn, a dangerous and enigmatic vampire, introduces a romantic tension that is both alluring and fraught with peril. The novel explores themes of love, loyalty, and the struggle for power in a world where vampires dominate.

One Dark Window, by Rachel Gillig (2022)

Rachel Gillig's novel masterfully intertwines gothic fantasy with romance. The protagonist, Elspeth Spindle, needs a monster to survive in her mist-locked kingdom, and she finds one in the Nightmare, a spirit in her head. Gillig's storytelling is remarkable in how it explores Elspeth's internal struggle with the Nightmare, blurring the lines between protector and captor. The introduction of a mysterious highwayman adds layers of intrigue and romance to the tale.

The setting is hauntingly beautiful, with its eerie forests and dark magic, creating a perfect backdrop for the unfolding drama. Gillig skillfully weaves a story of shadow and deception, where Elspeth's quest intertwines with forbidden love and a kingdom's dark secrets. The narrative is a compelling mix of suspense, dark fantasy, and a romance that evolves in the most unexpected ways, making “One Dark Window” a standout in the romantasy genre.

Lara, a warrior princess trained in isolation, is sent to the Bridge Kingdom under the guise of peace but with a mission to destroy it from within. The character development of Lara, from a tool of vengeance to a woman torn between duty and her newfound love, is compelling. The relationship between Lara and King Aren is a tumultuous journey filled with passion, betrayal, and unexpected alliances. The novel excels in its depiction of a morally grey world where decisions have far-reaching consequences. The Bridge Kingdom is a thrilling blend of adventure, romance, and a deep exploration of themes like loyalty, trust, and the true cost of war.

The post Top 4 Alex Aster Books (2023) – A New TikTok Star Author appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

In the ever-evolving world of young adult literature, the rise of social media platforms like TikTok has ushered in a new era of literary stars, among whom Alex Aster shines brightly. As a reader and a keen observer of the literary landscape, I've been fascinated by how authors like Aster are not only captivating their audience with compelling storytelling but also engaging with them through modern digital channels.

Alex Aster's books, particularly her Lightlark and Emblem Island series, are a testament to this new wave of literary success, blending imaginative world-building with themes that resonate deeply with today's youth.

The Emergence of Tiktok in Young Adult Literature

The intersection of Tiktok and literature has created a unique space where authors can connect with their audience on a personal level. This personal connection often translates into a deeper engagement with the books themselves. Aster, with her presence on TikTok, has exemplified this trend, bringing a fresh and dynamic approach to marketing and storytelling.

What Are The Top Alex Aster Books?

Nightbane, by Alex Aster (2023)

In Nightbane–the second book of the Lightlark series–Alex Aster elevates her storytelling to a new level. The narrative picks up with Isla Crown, now burdened with the weight of her newfound authority, grappling with the complexities of power and betrayal. What strikes me most about this sequel is the depth of its character development. Isla, once a character driven by the need to survive and overcome curses, now finds herself in a tumultuous struggle with her own heart and the expectations of leadership. The world of Lightlark, already richly detailed in the first book, expands even more intricately here. Aster's skill in weaving a web of political intrigue and personal drama is commendable. The way she delves into the darker aspects of Isla's psyche, exploring themes of power, responsibility, and the seduction of darker desires, is both engaging and thought-provoking.

The pacing in Nightbane is relentless, a characteristic I find utterly captivating. Aster masterfully balances action with emotional depth, ensuring that each chapter not only drives the plot forward but also deepens our understanding of her characters. The exploration of Isla's past, juxtaposed with her present, creates a compelling narrative that speaks to the timeless themes of identity and destiny. The book's climax, a high-stakes convergence of past secrets and present dangers, is a testament to Aster's ability to keep readers on the edge of their seats. In my opinion, Nightbane solidifies Alex Aster's position as a standout voice in YA fantasy, offering a story that is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining.

Lightlark, by Alex Aster (2023)

The first book in the Lightlark series introduces us to a world both enchanting and perilous. At the heart of this tale is Isla Crown, a character whose journey is marked by curses, power struggles, and the complexities of love. Aster's ability to create a world that is simultaneously familiar in its YA fantasy tropes and unique in its execution is remarkable. The Centennial, a deadly game that forms the crux of the story, is not just a backdrop for action but a catalyst for exploring deeper themes such as the nature of power, the weight of curses, and the price of ambition. Isla's character, forced to navigate treacherous alliances and her own inner turmoil, is a compelling protagonist who embodies both strength and vulnerability.

What I find particularly striking about Lightlark is its pace and narrative structure. Aster skillfully intertwines multiple storylines, each contributing to the rich tapestry of the Lightlark universe. The political intrigue, coupled with a romantic subplot, adds layers to the narrative, making it a multifaceted reading experience. The world-building in Lightlark is a true highlight, with Aster intricately detailing the island's mystical elements and the unique curses that plague each ruler. This attention to detail not only grounds the story in a vividly imagined world but also raises the stakes for each character involved. The concept of rulers fighting to break their curses in a game where death looms large is both thrilling and thought-provoking. It challenges readers to consider the lengths to which one might go to change their fate. The evolving dynamics between Isla and her fellow rulers, marked by alliances and betrayals, keep the narrative engaging and unpredictable. Aster's prose, both fluid and evocative, effectively captures the emotional intensity of Isla's journey, making Lightlark a standout debut in the series.

Curse of the Forgotten City, by Alex Aster (2023)

Curse of the Forgotten City, the second installment in the Emblem Island series, demonstrates Alex Aster's versatility as a storyteller. This book, steeped in Colombian mythology, offers a thrilling adventure that is both fast-paced and rich in cultural lore. The protagonist, Tor, along with his friends Engle and Melda, embarks on a quest that is not only physically daunting but also a journey of self-discovery and growth. Aster's talent lies in her ability to blend myth with reality, creating a narrative that is as educational as it is entertaining. The introduction of the cursed pirates and the quest for the Pirate's Pearl adds a fresh and exciting dimension to the series, keeping the reader engaged and curious.

The world-building in Curse of the Forgotten City is exceptional, with Aster creating a vibrant and immersive environment that feels both fantastical and authentic. The incorporation of Colombian mythology gives the story a unique flavor and serves as a bridge between different cultures and traditions. The character development of Tor is particularly noteworthy. As he grapples with the Night Witch's powers and the responsibilities they entail, we see a character who is evolving, learning to balance the weight of his newfound abilities with his innate sense of justice and loyalty. The dynamic between Tor and the other characters, especially the mysterious Vesper, adds depth to the narrative, exploring themes of trust, friendship, and the complexities of leadership. The action sequences are well-crafted, with Aster skillfully balancing tension and excitement. Curse of the Forgotten City is a testament to Aster's ability to craft a story that is both a thrilling adventure and a thoughtful exploration of character and culture.

Curse of the Night Witch, by Alex Aster (2023)

The first book in the Emblem Island series, Curse of the Night Witch, is a captivating entry into a world rich with mythology and adventure. Following Tor Luna, a young protagonist marked by a leadership emblem he wishes to forsake, the story delves into themes of destiny, choice, and the power of belief. Aster's prowess in weaving a narrative that is both a gripping adventure and a profound exploration of cultural myths is remarkable. The concept of Emblemites born with predetermined destinies is a fascinating premise that Aster explores with depth and sensitivity.

What I find most compelling about Curse of the Night Witch is its exploration of the consequences of altering one's fate. As Tor embarks on his perilous journey to confront the Night Witch and remove his curse, the story delves into the complexities of choice and destiny. The world of Emblem Island is vividly rendered, with each myth and creature Tor encounters adding a layer of richness to the narrative. The bond between Tor and his friends, Engle and Melda, is a highlight of the story, showcasing the strength of friendship and loyalty. Aster's narrative style is engaging, with a pace that keeps the reader hooked from start to finish. The book's exploration of themes such as identity, choice, and the nature of power is done with a deft hand, making Curse of the Night Witch a thought-provoking and entertaining read that sets a strong foundation for the series.

Final Thoughts on Alex Aster Books

Reflecting on Alex Aster's books, it's clear that she is not just a product of the TikTok era but a genuinely talented storyteller whose works resonate with a wide range of readers. Her ability to blend traditional fantasy elements with modern storytelling techniques and relatable themes makes her books stand out in the crowded YA fantasy landscape.

]]>

In my opinion, the realm of self-help books for young adults is a vibrant and ever-evolving landscape. It's a genre that not only provides guidance and support but also serves as a beacon of hope and understanding in a phase of life often marked by confusion and change.

These books aren't just about solving problems, they're about embarking on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.

The Evolving World of Young Adult Self-Help Literature

The self-help genre for young adults is a special category all its own, addressing the distinct needs and experiences of young people in transition. It's like a bridge between the carefree days of childhood and the adult responsibilities that lie ahead, exploring topics like self-discovery, emotional growth, and the transition to independence.

The Importance of Providing Self-help Book Resources to Young Adults

A recent academic article highlighted that the post COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated a pre-existing mental health crisis, intensified by social media, political instability and climate change concerns. Academic challenges were evident in decreased engagement and increased absenteeism, while physical health issues included long COVID symptoms and disrupted preventative care. The content of teens' worries varies with age, focusing on immediate experiences like school and friendships for younger teens, and broader concerns like gun violence and climate change for older ones. Many teens feel lonely and unsupported, amplifying the need for effective recovery strategies.

Books can be powerful agents of change, especially for young adults. They offer a wealth of knowledge, experiences, and advice, often from individuals who have navigated similar paths.

These resources play a vital role in helping young adults develop self-awareness, resilience, and problem-solving skills. They also provide a sense of comfort and understanding, reassuring young adults that they are not alone in their experiences.

In a world where young people are often bombarded with information and expectations, self-help books offer a focused and thoughtful approach to personal development and well-being.

This book is a comprehensive, empathetic, and empowering resource for navigating the complexities of teenage life. In my view, this book stands out for its holistic approach to the teenage experience, covering everything from personal hygiene to mental health and self-esteem. Higgins writes with a voice that is both relatable and authoritative, making it a perfect guide for young girls looking for practical advice and emotional support.

The book’s coverage of topics like peer pressure, social media, and preparing for college is particularly relevant in today’s context. It's a book that doesn't just offer solutions; it fosters understanding and confidence, making it a must-read for young girls seeking to navigate their teenage years with grace and self-assurance.

Three Things I’d Tell My Younger Self, by Joanna Cannon (2018)

Three Things I’d Tell My Younger Self is a delightful and thought-provoking compilation of advice from various contributors. I found this book to be a treasure trove of wisdom, humor, and heart. Each piece of advice, drawn from personal experiences, offers valuable insights into life's myriad challenges and joys.

What makes this book stand out is its collective voice – it’s like receiving guidance from a community of mentors who’ve walked the path before you. For young adults, this book is a comforting reminder that they are not alone in their struggles and that wisdom can be found in the most unexpected places. It's a book that encourages reflection and resilience, making it a valuable addition to any young adult's library.

101 Secrets For Your Twenties, by Paul Angone (2013)

Paul Angone’s 101 Secrets For Your Twenties is a candid and humorous guide that resonates deeply with the twenty-something experience. Reading this book felt like having a conversation with a witty, wise older sibling who’s been through it all. Angone's blend of humor and honesty is both refreshing and reassuring.

The book covers a wide range of topics, from career struggles to relationship dilemmas, offering practical wisdom that is both relatable and actionable. It's a book that doesn't shy away from the realities of young adulthood, instead embracing them with humor and empathy. This book is a must-read for anyone navigating the often turbulent transition into adulthood, offering laughter, guidance, and a sense of solidarity.

Unfuck Your Brain, by Dr. Faith G Harper (2017)

Dr. Faith G Harper’s “Unfuck Your Brain” is a bold and no-nonsense guide to understanding and managing the complexities of our brain and mental health. This book impressed me with its straightforward approach and the use of humor to tackle serious topics. Dr. Harper combines scientific insights with practical advice, making complex psychological concepts accessible and engaging. This book is particularly relevant for young adults who are dealing with the pressures and anxieties of modern life.

It offers a fresh perspective on mental health, encouraging readers to take control of their well-being in a proactive and empowering way. The book's frank and approachable style makes it a standout read in the self-help genre, especially for those who appreciate a more direct and unfiltered approach to personal development.

Help Me, I'm Stuck, by Vaughn Carter (2021)

In Help Me, I’m Stuck, Vaughn Carter presents practical strategies for overcoming self-sabotage and negative thinking. What struck me about this book is its focus on the power of mindset in shaping our experiences and outcomes. Carter’s approach is both empathetic and pragmatic, offering insights into how we can change our thought patterns to improve our overall well-being.

The book’s exploration of common mental traps and practical tips for getting unstuck are incredibly relevant for young adults who are often grappling with self-doubt and uncertainty. Carter’s writing is clear and engaging, making complex psychological concepts accessible to a broad audience. This book is a valuable resource for anyone looking to break free from negative thinking and embark on a more positive and fulfilling life path.

Don't Wear Shoes You Can't Walk In, by Michelle Douglas (2022)

Michelle Douglas offers a compelling narrative that resonates deeply with young adults in this book. Douglas's journey, from the age of twenty-one to thirty-one, encompasses a spectrum of life's milestones – moving, working, loving, and more.

Each page of this book feels like a conversation with a wise friend who has been there and done that. Her insights, such as ‘the weakness isn’t necessarily where the leak is' and ‘surround yourself with people who are willing to lift while they climb,' are not just catchy phrases but life lessons.

What I appreciate most about this book is its dual nature: part advice book, part journal. It encourages not just passive reading but active reflection and learning. This book is particularly impactful for anyone at the crossroads of life, be it starting out or starting over.

How To Be An Adult For Teens – The Practical Side, by Genius Rascal Press (2022)

This book addresses a critical need in young adult literature: practical life skills. In my opinion, this book fills a significant gap, offering tangible, actionable advice for teens on the verge of adulthood. The book's approach is comprehensive, covering a wide array of topics from personal healthcare and grooming to domestic skills and emergency preparedness.

The writing style is accessible and engaging, making it easy for young readers to absorb and apply the lessons. What makes this book a standout in the young adult self-help genre is its focus on practicality.

It doesn't just talk about abstract concepts of adulthood but delves into the nitty-gritty of daily living – a crucial aspect often overlooked in traditional educational settings.

Key Aspects of Self-Help Books for Young Adults: My Perspective

In my view, self-help books tailored for young adults have a few key aspects that make them particularly effective. First and foremost, they focus on identity and self-discovery. This is a crucial element because young adulthood is often a time of exploring and solidifying one's sense of self. These books guide readers through understanding their values, beliefs, passions, and the complexities of their identities, including gender, sexuality, and cultural background.

Another aspect I find indispensable in these books is the emphasis on mental health and emotional well-being. Given the rising concerns about mental health among young adults, these books offer invaluable strategies for managing stress, anxiety, and depression. Techniques such as mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral strategies, and resilience-building are often central to these discussions, providing young adults with practical tools for emotional regulation and mental health maintenance.

I also believe that a focus on relationships and social skills is vital. These books often maintain healthy relationships, whether platonic, romantic, or familial. They cover essential skills like effective communication, setting boundaries, dealing with peer pressure, and navigating the challenges posed by social media.

Final Thoughts on Self-Help Books For Young Adults

I must say, while there’s always room for exploring more areas in the genre of self-help books for young adults, the selected books seem to cover the most pertinent topics quite effectively.

Each book offers a unique perspective, whether it's about finding inner peace, navigating social complexities, or building resilience. The common thread among them is the recognition of the young adult phase as a crucial and transformative period in life.

These books serve as invaluable companions, guiding readers through the ups and downs of this exciting yet challenging phase. In a world that often seems overwhelming, these books offer solace, inspiration, and the tools needed for personal growth and happiness.

Things We Left Behind (Knockemout Book 3), by Colleen Hoover (2023)

I'm enthralled by the sizzling yet doomed relationship between Lucian Rollins and Sloane Walton. They make an implausible pair – the cynical, isolated millionaire and the righteous librarian seeking justice – yet the chemistry between them leaps off the page.

We first meet Lucian as he feverishly builds his empire, determined to outrun the shadows of his family's tainted name. He meets his match in Sloane, who crashes into his life searching for answers about her own father. They share a dark secret from years before that complicates everything.

Though their blistering attraction is undeniable after a steamy one-night stand, their clashing outlooks doom any chance for happiness. Lucian's refusal to marry and have children cuts Sloane deeply. His belief that he must not “break” her like so many of the damaged men in his past only pushes her farther away when he abandons her. My heart ached for Sloane as she swears him off for good.

Yet when she falls prey to new threats, I wondered if Lucian would come charging back to her rescue. Would seeing Sloane imperiled allow him to overcome the demons of his past? Would she ever trust him with her heart again if he returned?

It Starts with Us (It Ends with Us Book 2), by Colleen Hoover (2022)

Colleen Hoover, who has drawn massive attention to the story of Atlas, tells the story in another installment in her new, long-anticipated novel.

The book is already hit on Amazon, hence it is available on for pre-order and will be one the most anticipated book of 2022.

The book follow the legacy of the first book, It Ends with Us. Hence we have no further details about the story, it will most likely pick up the happenings after the divorce of Ryle and Lily. Lily is determined that she want another life for her baby girl. Eleven months later when she meets Atlas again she is ready for a new start with him.

Finding Perfect (Hopeless Book 4), by Colleen Hoover (2022)

Once Daniel and Six met in they instantly realized that there was a spark between them that ended with a pregnancy. Since the bond between them was still weak, Six gave the child for adoption not knowing she will fall in love with Daniel once again.

Finding Perfect tells the story of Colleen Hoover's Six and Daniel. The story is from the standpoint of Daniel, and the readers will finally get a conclusion we were looking for. While reading the short story, my heart must have melted somewhere.

An incredibly emotional and beautiful story with a HEA ending.

Reminders of Him, by Colleen Hoover (2022)

After serving a five-year prison sentence for a huge mistake, Kenna comes back to the town where it all happened.

Only one person hasn't shut the door on her is Ledger Ward, a local owner of a bar and one of the few remaining links to Kenna's daughter. But if anyone were to discover how Ledger is becoming an important part of Kenna’s life, both would run the risk of losing the trust of those closest to them.

Romance develops between the two despite the threat that surrounds them. But things really start to heat up when the couple finds themselves in jeopardy. Kenna must find a way to absolve her past mistakes in order to build a hopeful future!

Heart Bones, by Colleen Hoover(2020)

Beyah is a hardworking immigrant. She has no family but worked tirelessly to become a successful entrepreneur who helps others just the same. But when one last parent of one last victim unexpectedly dies, Beyah finds herself stuck in limbo between her past and future and needs someone trustworthy to lean on before she loses everything.

This book takes you on an emotional roller coaster. You'll be head over heels for these two characters and every word of this story. The love these two share is pure and true – strong enough to carry them through whatever life hurls at them.

The way this story unfolds, you feel like you've known the characters all along and that they're really people you can relate to – they seem so relatable even in the most unbelievable situations.

Colleen has written something incredible here. I felt like I was a part of it all and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a moving read.

Regretting You, by Colleen Hoover (2019)

Morgan Grant wished she could be more like her 16-year-old daughter Clara, just as Clara wished she could be more like her predictably boring mother. Mother and daughter knew they wouldn't change each other's minds, so they made a pact: they'd show each other how hard learning to let go really is.

While struggling to rebuild everything that crashed around them, Morgan finds comfort in the last person she would have expected, and Clara turns to the one boy she can't see. Little by little, their unwelcome feelings grow stronger and stronger, making it difficult for mother and daughter to ever reunite again.

If you would like to pick only one book from this list, I would recommend this Colleen Hoover book.

All Your Perfects, by Colleen Hoover (2018)

This is definitely the most heart wrecking story among Colleen hoover books.

The story takes place in two time planes. In the past, we can see how Quinn and Graham find each other by chance or rather by fate. As from the first moment they fit into each other's lives like two pieces of a puzzle, and as a love stronger than anything unfolds between them.

This book had so much to say, and Colleen Hoover's talent for conveying the million emotions that the story contained was incredible.

It Ends with Us, by Colleen Hoover (2016)

This is one of the best novel from the collection of Colleen Hoover books. The book has up to 300,000 ratings on Amazon!

Lily has had different jobs that were all very fun for her and helped her gain a lot of new skills in the process. One of which is the fact that she used to work as a fugitive tracker, which was a pretty interesting job.

Ryle has very strong opinions and beliefs. He is passionate about the things he loves and what irks him, and won’t hesitate to raise his voice if he feels it’s necessary to get a point across.

As her thoughts of Ryle overwhelm her, so do questions about a new relationship that is all too much to deal with. She carried on the memories of Atlas – the first love she left behind. He was her kindred spirit and had taken care of her just like Ryle would have. But when Atlas suddenly reappears in her life, she has trouble deciding what to do with both men from either side of the past whom she left behind.

And after spending some quality time together, they find many commonalities between each of their worlds and begin bonding over their shared love of storytelling.

Ugly Love, by Colleen Hoover (2014)

Slammed, by Colleen Hoover (2012)

Layken, age eighteen, is the sole rock in her life after an unanticipated death in her family left her looking for solace alongside her family members. Her external strength tempts others. Rather than allowing herself to sink into melancholy, she latches onto her first real friend, a handsome young man, who excites her with his enthusiasm for poetry slams.

A heart-stopping first date is a crucial point on one's love life. The new couple finally show sympathy once they're shocked about something unfathomable about each other.

The daily connection and messages became painful when their emotions demolish the boundaries. Only by the poetry they share can they communicate the rumblings in their heart.

As a short final conclusion, these are some of the most engaging COHO books to read. Some of them are more like YA novels, some of them are for New Adults, but they are full of emotion no matter. The post Top 8 Christina Lauren Books In Order (2023) Updated appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

You only need one book signed by Christina Lauren to fall in love with the storytelling capabilities and funky plot twists. There’s a bit of humor, plenty of young adult fiction, as well as romance and action, basically, a bit of everything.

Unveiling Christina Lauren: The Dynamic Duo Behind the Pen Name

What most people don’t know is the fact that Christina Lauren is not one author. Sure, you’ll find quite a few Christina Lauren books, but the pen name is actually used by two writing partners and best friends, Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings, who together have authored 18 New York Times bestselling novels in both YA and women's fiction genres.

Lauren Billings, also known as Lo, holds a doctorate in neuroscience from UC Irvine and has previously conducted research on neurodegeneration in aging. She lives in California with her family and two dogs. Christina Hobbs, affectionately called PQ by Lo, previously worked in a junior high counseling office and now spends her time writing or watching BTS videos. She resides in Utah with her husband and daughter, and is passionate about boy bands and glitter.

The duo has had their books translated into over 30 languages. With these thoughts in mind, let me introduce you to some of my favorite releases.

I have arranged the following Christina Lauren books in reverse chronological order for your convenience.

What Are The Top Christina Lauren Books?

The True Love Experiment, by Christina Lauren (2023)

To be honest with you, I strongly believe this book will be made into a movie at some point, it’s that good. As one of my favorite Christina Lauren books, it tells Fizzy’s story. She feels a bit lost. She’s a successful romance writer, but she has never experienced what she’s preaching for.

Sure, she’s felt lust and passion before, but she had never experienced those butterflies, those feelings of always thinking about him. And then, her constant optimism slowly turns into pessimism, as she realizes she has no clue what love feels like.

But then, she meets Connor, a filmmaker, and single father. He's asked to create a reality TV show based on love, but he has no clue where to start. When the two meet, they realize this could be the perfect scenario.

There’s only one problem. He’s pretty good at making her fall for him, but his feelings are not going in the right direction. From this point on, I’ll let you discover the outcome yourself.

Something Wilder, by Christina Lauren (2023)

Lily’s childhood hasn’t been great. Her father Duke, a famous treasure hunter, hasn't been around too much. She's grown up without much patience and, despite her father's job, without too much money too. But she's not stupid, though.

Using her father’s hand-drawn maps, she decides to start a local tourism business, guiding tourists around less known areas. Moreover, on a side note, she also guides amateur treasure hunters through the canyons in Utah.

She has a dream though, buying her father’s ranch, the one he got rid of years ago. However, while her jobs do help with the bills, there’s not enough left to fulfill her dreams. When her childhood love Leo turns up, she’s all about business, despite his attempts to get her to fall in love with him.

And that’s when the action begins.

The Soulmate Equation, by Christina Lauren (2021)

This is one of my favorite Christina Lauren books and follows single mom Jess and the fine line between fate and decision. She plays it safe, loves numbers, and takes no risks. Therefore, she's not really interested in getting back on the dating scene. After all, her family wasn't great, so she’s not too confident.

But then, she finds out about GeneticAlly, similar to some reality TV shows these days. Basically, the company grabs DNA from more people to find the perfect match. This makes sense, and after all, there are no risks at all, so she’s up for the challenge.

Surprisingly for everyone, she's matching the GeneticAlly founder by 98%. She already knows Doctor River, and she finds it difficult to believe. He's far from what she would expect from her soulmate. However, GeneticAlly comes with an offer she just can’t refuse.

Whether it's money or true love, I'll let you find out yourself what happens in this spicy story. And trust me, if you think you know how it ends, I recommend reading it first, and you'll be surprised.

In a Holidaze, by Christina Lauren (2020)

Christmas is the most beautiful time of the year, but not for everyone. Maelyn lives with her parents, and she hates everything about her life. She's been terribly failed in love, while her job pays the bills, but has nothing to do with her dreams. In other words, she’s a total mess.

This is the last Christmas she’ll spend at the cabin in Utah where her family has always spent holidays. Driving away in tears, she asks the universe for a change. What’s going to make her happy? What’s going to show her what happiness looks like? And then, she gets a sign.

She’s involved in an accident and passes out without remembering anything. When she wakes up, she’s on an airplane, going on holiday to the beloved cabin. It’s a time loop that keeps repeating again and again. There’s definitely something she’s doing wrong, but she has to figure out what.

She’ll have to find happiness one way or another in order to break free. Will she manage to do it?

The Honey-Don't List, by Christina Lauren (2020)

Carey is nearly an expert in home remodeling. After all, she’s worked for some of the most famous names in the industry. But deep down inside her, she’s a country girl, despite her vision in terms of interior design.

Now, the design gurus she works for are about to take the world by storm. Everyone knows who they are. They’re about to launch a book too, but there’s one major problem. Melissa and Rusty hate each other, despite posing as a perfect couple.

They're about to go on a tour, and they take Carey with them, as well as James, a structural engineer. They both dislike the idea, but none of them can quit. Carey needs the money and insurance, while James has been promised the role of a lifetime.

Get ready for a cheeky adventure full of quirky fun and a bit of romance.

Twice in a Blue Moon, by Christina Lauren (2019)

Sam and Tate discover love on vacation abroad. However, this isn't just a summer love. It's not one of those new relationships where they discover themselves. Instead, it's one of those where they share everything, their goals in life, passions, literally everything.

Time flies, though and they take different paths in life. Tate is a movie star's daughter and follows the same road. However, no one can tell what the future has in store for them. And 14 years later, while she still thinks about her first love, she finds him.

He’s there, just as confident. He’s looking at her, but she can’t forget the past. He betrayed her. Now, she’s asking herself whether she’s about to make the same mistake again. Or maybe he’s changed, who knows? After all, he’s a grown man now.

I won't give you too many spoilers, but you'll love the outcome. Besides, you'll recognize Christina Lauren’s remarkable signature straight away.

The Unhoneymooners, by Christina Lauren (2019)

Her bad luck just won't let go, though. Everyone at the wedding gets food poisoning, apart from Olive and Ethan. And now there’s a honeymoon up for grabs, but no one can really go.

The two decide to put their hatred aside in order to enjoy this beautiful vacation in Hawaii. A bunch of small mistakes and issues lead to a plethora of misunderstandings. Now, Olive and Ethan must pretend they're in a relationship in order to save appearances.

Love and Other Words, by Christina Lauren (2018)

Macy is extremely ambitious and tries to plan every little aspect of her life. She works like a slave in order to build a career in medicine, but she also wants to marry an older and more responsible man, ideally a financially secure one.

She has experienced love before, but nothing really lasts. Now, she runs into Elliot, the first love of her life and probably the only man she's truly cared about. Her heart takes over, and her well detailed plan starts falling apart.

The problem is he’s already broken her heart in the past, so she doesn’t want to make the same mistake again.

The best part about this book? The action floats between then and now. You’ll be surprised by some of their reactions, but then you’ll understand why they do this and that. Small references to the past will fill the gaps and give you a better image, definitely one of the best Christina Lauren books.

The post Top 8+ Jennifer Lynn Barnes Books (In Order) Updated appeared first on Joelbooks.

Exploring Jennifer Lynn Barnes's books is like getting lost in a good conversation – it's easy, engaging, and leaves you thinking about it long after it's over. Jennifer, born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, isn't just an author; she's also a brainy academic with a PhD in psychology from Yale. It's clear how her deep understanding of people shapes her stories, making them more real and relatable.

Jennifer Lynn Barnes (Jen) started young, getting her first book out while still in high school, which is pretty cool. That set her up for a career where she seems to effortlessly connect with both teenagers and adults. Her books usually have strong female characters at their heart, dealing with real-life stuff like figuring out who they are, navigating complex relationships, and sometimes, just trying to get by in a world that can be pretty confusing.

In this article we'll walk through what I think are her best works. Each one is a great example of how she tells a story – they're not just fun to read but also give you something to think about.

What Are The Best Jennifer Lynn Barnes Books in Order?

The Brothers Hawthorne (The Inheritance Games Book 4), by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (2023)

We're back with the Hawthorne family, but this time the spotlight is on Grayson and Jameson, and they're as different as ever. Grayson, the one groomed to be the heir, is all about precision and efficiency. It's fascinating to see him handle family crises. His approach is almost clinical, yet there's this underlying current of loyalty and duty that you can't miss. The way he jumps into action to help his half-sisters shows a depth to his character that I didn't fully appreciate in the earlier books.

Then there's Jameson, the risk-taker. His storyline is like something out of a high-stakes spy novel. Infiltrating London's elite gambling circles? That's classic Jameson, but it's also nerve-wracking. Every move he makes in this dangerous game had me on the edge of my seat.

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games Book 2), by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (2021)

Picking up right where the first book left off, we're thrown back into Avery Grambs' chaotic world. I mean, imagine finding out you've inherited a fortune from a complete stranger, and then learning you might actually be connected to this wealthy family. That's Avery's life right now.

The whole DNA twist really got me. Avery isn't a Hawthorne by blood, yet there's this undeniable link to the family. It's like every chapter throws a new puzzle piece at you. I found myself trying to piece together this mystery alongside Avery, which made the reading experience pretty engaging.

Honestly, I didn't expect to be so hooked on this series, but here I am.

The Inheritance Games (The Inheritance Games Book 1), by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (2020)

Avery Grambs plans to have a better future. But her fortunes instantly change when the wealthy Tobias Hawthorne dies, leaving her his fortune. Avery doesn’t know who he is and can’t determine his intentions.

For Avery to get her inheritance, she has to move into Hawthorne’s house, which is sprawling with secrets. Each room bears Tobias’ touch and his affection for riddles, puzzles, and codes. Unfortunately, this house also houses the family Tobias has dispossessed- his four grandsons, who are brilliant, magnetic, but dangerous.

One of them, Grayson, is convinced that Avery is a con and is firmly resolved to take her down. Jameson sees her as Hawthorne’s last hurrah and a puzzle that needs unraveling. Caught up in a wealthy, privileged, and dangerous world, Avery must play the game for survival.

This book is a blend of illicit romance, family secrets, and a high-stakes treasure hunt. It gives the vibes of Knives Out, and One of Us is Lying. Its mystery is packed in twists and turns and will be impossible to put down. I love that the book is easy to read, but Jennifer’s skillful writing and mastery are evident.

Little White Lies (Debutantes Book 1), by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (2018)

You will love this book if you enjoy scandals, schemes, blackmail, and secrets that rouse tension. But you will also find it highly entertaining if you love witty humor.

Sawyer, eighteen, is an auto mechanic and never anticipated her estranged grandmother would show up at her house, offering her a six-figure contract to join debutante’s season. She definitely never thought she would agree to this. But she realizes that getting involved with her grandmother’s society might be the answer to her dad’s identity- her biggest life mystery.

Soon, Sawyer gets into a life of makeovers and gets drawn to some debutantes. Sawyer will find out that apart from her family, there are other people in her grandmother’s dazzling world, and nobody wants her digging into the past.

She will navigate twisted relationships as she searches for her true origins. But this is only the starting point to more trouble.

The Naturals (The Naturals Book 1), by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (2013)

The Naturals will highly appeal to you if you are a fan of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder or Criminal Minds.

The book talks about Cassie, who is seventeen and a natural at reading people. She can piece together the most minute details to tell you who you are and what you need. But she has never taken this gift seriously. Until the FBI showed up at her door.

They have initiated a classified program that uses aberrant teenagers to crack disgraceful cold cases, and they now want Cassie’s help. She, however, doesn’t realize that a lot more is at risk than several unsolved homicides.

Cassie will be sent to live with other teens who also possess unusual gifts, and soon it will be apparent that nobody in this program is what they appear to be. Danger will loom following the strike of a new killer, and the Naturals will have to employ all their gifts for survival.

The Naturals is well thought out. You will love the unexpected twists and turns, keep guessing what will happen, and stay glued even more. It also has a dose of romance and chemistry between the characters.

The Fixer, by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (2015)

The Fixer is a must-read if you love a book that delves into a world of power, privilege, and money. It is brilliantly written with unforeseen twists that bring out the plot’s mystery.

The book tells the story of Tess Kendrick. She is sixteen when she is sent to her older sister’s place. She doesn’t know that her sister Ivy is the DC’s primary “fixer. Ivy deals with politician scandals and makes them go away for pay.

Tess will soon begin following in her sister’s footsteps- she enrolls in a school where she becomes the DC’s number one high school fixer. Her job is to solve problems for elite teenagers. These two sisters will live double lives as secrets pile up until their world’s crash. Tess will find herself at the center of a conspiracy with Ivy’s client and her classmate. A lot more will be on the line, and the price for this fix might be a lot that Tess is ready to pay.

Raised by Wolves (Raised by Wolves Book 1), by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (2010)

Raised by Wolves is a total treat from its originality and thrill. It is an exhilarating adventure that you will love if you fancy stories about the breaking of governance. Its characterization is unusual and good, like the plot to make you feel each character’s struggle.

Werewolves raised Bryn following her parents’ murder by a rabid werewolf. She now only knows about pack life and the strict social hierarchy in control. However, this doesn’t mean Bryn is averse to rule-breaking.

Her curiosity will lead her to discover Chase, a new teenager locked in the basement. She sees him turn into a wolf and the terrifying ordeal of her mother's murder come back. Bryn will become obsessed with gathering answers to her questions, and only Chase can give her the information she is looking for.

In her quest to find out the truth, will Bryn go past the pack’s constraints and leave her friends and current identity behind?

The Squad: Perfect Cover (The Squad series Book 1), by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (2008)

Perfect Cover is a humorous read packed with action and spies. You will love the mission and operations involved among the characters and also marvel at their teamwork. It is definitely a must-read if you would love to merge Charlie’s Angels and James Bond.

Bayport High’s Varsity cheerleading squad has only the hottest members. But there is more to this A-list squad. It is a dangerous cover-up for the best-trained underage US government operatives. They are perfect since nobody expects much from cheerleaders beyond their highlights.

The cheerleading squad will start sending encrypted messages to Toby Klein (a social misfit) about upcoming tryouts. But what do they want with her? Toby just wants to stay in the background while protecting her brother from Bayport’s bullies.

To get out of detention and out of curiosity, Toby decides to go to the tryouts, but she discovers something that will bring her down substantially.

Tattoo, by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (2007)

Tattoo is a quick and enthralling book if you enjoy a mythical and mysterious read with hints of conflict.

This fascinating book is about the dynamic of four friends- Bailey, Zo, Delia, and Annabell who accidentally find an unusual kiosk that sells temporary tattoos at the mall.

Bailey purchases the tattoos and gives each girl, who puts them on different places. Despite the girls not having water to place the tattoos on their bodies, they stick. Interesting, right?

These tattoos give each girl special powers. Bailey can set anything on fire, Zo can see the future, and Delia will soon be able to transform any object she wants. Annabell can read people’s minds and influence them into action.

These girls are sure they will kill at the upcoming school dance with these tattoos. But killing is just what is in their heads. They get into the battle of their lives. It will be up to them to save the world. But there is a catch. They might stand a chance if they can stop Delia from using her powers.

Golden, by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (2006)

If you enjoy supernatural teenage high school drama stories, Golden is your go-to novel. It is a mix of humor, fantasy, and drama.

This book tells the story and life of Lissy James, who possesses the psychic gift of Sight. She sees colored clouds and an aura that surrounds people reflecting their moods.

Lissy and her family move from California to Oklahoma, where she joins a new high school.

There, she meets typical social class divisions; the ‘Golden,’ made up of famous and beautiful people, and the Non (the rest). Lissy meets Lilah, a Golden crew member, and begins to identify with other Nons, Audra, and Dylan. Unfortunately, something evil is happening in the school.

It is up to Lissy, Audra, Dylan, and Lissy’s sister Lexie to find out about the new evil math teacher and prove the same to her mother and grandmother before more deaths occur.

The characters in this book are relatable teens whose lives most young adults will resonate with, and its original and exciting premise makes it a refreshing page-turner.

The post Top 5 Sally Rooney Books (Ranked) For 2023 appeared first on Joelbooks.

]]>

As an avid reader, I have always been interested in what other readers share and recommend as good reads, particularly on social media. Thanks to BookTok, I discovered Sally Rooney's incredible writing. She gained immense popularity, and that is when I knew I had to check out her book titles.

Sally Rooney's books are fictional and tell the stories of teenagers and young adults navigating life complexities. You will often find her playing with themes surrounding relationships, such as romantic affairs, friendships, mental health issues, and growing up which are all very relatable for many of us.

Who is Sally Rooney?

Sally Rooney is an Irish author and novelist. She was born on February 20, 1991, in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. She gained recognition in the literary world with her debut novel Conversations with Friends in 2017, which was followed by her second novel Normal People in 2018. Both novels have been critically acclaimed and have won numerous awards.

Rooney's writing has been praised for its sharpness, intelligence, and insight into the complexities of modern relationships. Her novels often deal with themes of love, class, politics, and the struggles of young people in contemporary society.

In addition to her novels, Rooney has also written essays and short stories. She has been named one of Forbes' 30 under 30 in the European Arts and Culture category in 2018 and was included on the 2019 Time 100 Next list.

I have read Sally’s books over the past year; the ones below are my favorite picks. Each book's rank is determined by both its overall popularity and the quality of its stories.

What Are the top Sally Rooney Books Ranked?

Conversations with Friends, by Sally Rooney (2017)

Conversations with Friends is a realistic comedy with the themes of friendship and adultery. It is the story of Frances, a young woman who makes dark observations and is coolheaded. She is vaguely pursuing a writing career as she takes on her studies in Dublin. Bobbi, her best friend, is beautiful but very self-possessed.

During one of the local poetry performances, the two meet Melissa, a renowned photographer, and they both get drawn to her world. But Frances is not impressed much by Melissa’s good-looking husband, Nick, and their highly sophisticated home.

However, it is rather amusing when Nick and Frances’ flirtation begins. But not for long. It starts to bring forth a weird and painful intimacy. Melissa and Bobbi’s budding friendship also causes Frances to feel alienated.

You will love how Sally has precisely written this book and its sly sense of humor. How she highlights and talks about youthly dangers, pleasure, and the messy corners and complications of female friendship is highly impressive as it is enlightening.

Normal People, by Sally Rooney (2020)

BookTok convinced me to get this read, and I was impressed. The book follows and details the transformative power of relationships by telling Marianne and Connell’s story. Their experiences began in their final high school year.

Marianne is reserved and quite shy. Connell, on the other hand, is popular and the star of the rugby team. Upon grabbing this book, you might think it is the typical cliche of how shy girls meet popular boys. However, I felt that it subverted those expectations as the story developed.

As teenagers, these two share intimate moments and wind up together at Trinity College.

Marianne and Connell face communication challenges that lead to problems as they date other people, and they are unable to express their true feelings for each other.

Normal People is a profoundly emotional and ideal read for millennials. It has deep insights into what it means to be young and in love in today’s world.

Beautiful World, Where are You, by Sally Rooney (2022)

This book is a dialectical and artistic love letter that, by extension, depicts the ways human beings relate. It combines Sally’s excellent character development with her witty writing style and mature economy of language.

You will follow through the story of four young characters, Alice, Eileen, Felix, and Simon. Alice, a writer, meets Felix, a warehouse employee, on a dating app and asks him to visit Rome with her. Meanwhile, Alice’s best friend, Eileen, is recovering from a recent breakup when she slips back to her old patterns and begins flirting with Simon, her childhood friend.

Life is catching up with the four. They desire to be with each other while still deluding each other. Their experiences intertwine as they try to figure out their life paths. They get together, break, and engage in sexual activity while worrying about sex and fearing for their friendships and the world. Could they be getting some light while building their way to dooming darkness? Are they witnessing something? Can they become believers in a beautiful world?

I loved how captivating this story was. Even though it seemed less relatable to me, it is an excellent read for young readers. Sally’s touching honesty and quiet writing brilliance pulls you delightfully and compulsively.

Normal People: The Scripts, by Sally Rooney (2021)

If you want to delve deeper into the Normal People series, you need this read. It features iconic behind-the-scenes photos of the series, which will make you want to check out the show if you haven’t already. Additionally, it has an introduction by the show’s director Lenny Abrahamson.

The Scripts goes further to show Rooney’s sensibility uniquely. The book touches on politics, class, and power dynamics with conversations you will love.

You get to engage further with Connell and Marianne’s story with a pictorial point of view. The book is precise, and Sally has meticulously captured how a generation brought up on social data behaves through thought and words. I particularly loved how Rooney provides a window for Connell and Marianne to be their true selves.

At its core, The Scripts is a fascinating masterpiece that depicts the type of millennial deadpan that seems to skewer personality and life.

Mr Salary, by Sally Rooney (2019)

You will enjoy this mini-book once you have read Normal People. The story is shorter, but the narrative is somewhat similar. The book follows the story of a frisson-filled relationship and inconvenient attractions of a young woman Sukie, to Nathan, an older man.

After losing her mother and dealing with a difficult father, she has no choice but to move in with Nathan, who is part of Sukie's extended family. Eventually, they find themselves on the verge of an inevitable connection.

Mr Salary will leave you enraged and yearning for more. You might even read it twice. Nothing is earth-shaking in the book, and it has no gimmicks, but it is utterly captivating for some reason. It must be Sally’s wit when it comes to fiction writing. Just like in her other books, she explores emotional baggage between the characters and creates an emotional pull about life experiences.

Inspiring Quotes from Shelly Rooney Books

No one can be independent of other people completely, so why not give up the attempt, she thought, go running in the other direction, depend on people for everything, allow them to depend on you, why not.

― Sally Rooney, Normal People

Gradually the waiting began to feel less like waiting and more like this was simply what life was: the distracting tasks undertaken while the thing you are waiting for continues not to happen.

― Sally Rooney, Conversations with Friends

And we hate people for making mistakes so much more than we love them for doing good that the
easiest way to live is to do nothing, say nothing, and love no one.

― Sally Rooney, Beautiful World, Where Are You

Final Thoughts

Sally's talent as a psychological portraitist is evident in the books mentioned above. Her writing isn't just about vocabulary or metaphors, but rather an orchestration of words that creates a delightful symphony, taking readers on an unforgettable journey with a beautiful crescendo. I highly recommend picking up any of her books and experiencing them for yourself.
